Pirates and Spartans will cap six-game schedule Saturday at Davis

The Class 4A girls selection committee at least had some fun with its seeding that was released late Sunday morning.

Defending state champion Davis was on the 1 line and will host … drum roll please … eighth-seeded Sumner in the round-of-16.

Last year, the Pirates – also the top seed – fell to the Spartans – also seeded eighth – in the Pirate Ship in the round of 16, the only in-state team to beat Davis the last two seasons.

The two teams would battle through the bracket, Davis having to play an extra game because of the loss, and met in the championship, with the Pirates winning their first state title.

In a telephone call Sunday, Pirates coach Akil Smith joked that his squad has played Sumner more times in the past few years than teams in the CBBN.

They’ll be the main event of a six-game schedule Saturday at Davis High School at 8. The school also will host a Wapato doubleheader Friday night.

Eisenhower, which won seven of its last eight games to reach the tournament for the first time in 20 years, is seeded 16th and will visit No. 9 Auburn at 4 p.m. Saturday.

In the 4A boys draw, West Valley is in the round of 16 for the fourth straight season after its third district title in a row. They’re guaranteed a trip to the Tacoma Dome – but barely.

The Rams (19-2) are the eighth seed and will meet No. 1 Mount Si at 4 p.m. Saturday at Issaquah High School. The Wildcats (20-1) welcomed back Lattimore Ford to the lineup late last month, after the star forward was out nearly a year recovering from a knee injury.

Sunnyside (15-8), which handled Moses Lake (21-3) for the second CBBN berth, is seeded 16th and heads to No. 9 Auburn, and will follow the Ike girls at 6 p.m.

In the 2A boys, both Selah and Grandview are guaranteed of reaching the Yakima Valley SunDome. The Vikings (21-3), who went unbeaten through the 16-game CWAC, weren’t penalized after falling to Grandview in the district title game, and are seeded third and will meet No. 6 Anacortes (20-4) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Davis.

The CWAC title could’ve only helped the Greyhounds (18-6), who are No. 7 and drew second-seeded R.A. Long, the lone unbeaten in 2A at 24-0. Grandview, which is guaranteed of playing in the SunDome, will face the Lumberjacks at 2 p.m. Saturday.

All three CWAC girls teams are top-eight seeds and thus assured of playing in the SunDome.

Conference and district champion Prosser (21-3) is seeded third. Winners of 13 straight, the Mustangs will meet W.F. West (20-4) at 6 p.m. Friday at Grandview High School.

Ellensburg (19-5) won seven straight before falling to Prosser in the district final, and are seeded No. 7, and will meet No. 2 Deer Park (21-2) to cap Saturday’s action at West Valley of Spokane at 8.

Selah (19-7) slipped into a guaranteed SunDome berth, and No. 8 and drew two-time defending champion Lynden, the top seed which is the only 2A unbeaten at 23-0. The Vikings will be on the Lions’ homecourt at 6 p.m. Friday.

Zillah earned the No. 1 in the boys and No. 2 in the girls.

The undefeated boys (23-0) meet No. 8 Seattle Christian (17-5) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Davis.

Royal (21-3), whose only losses are to the Leopards, is seeded third and gets No. 6 King’s (17-6) in a battle of the Knights, at Davis on Saturday at 2.

Wapato (15-11) upended Medical Lake on Saturday to qualify, and is seeded 12th. The Wolves will face No. 15 Montesano (17-6) at 6 p.m. Friday.

Zillah’s girls (22-2) will meet No. 7 Seton Catholic (20-3) in a rematch of last year’s round-of-16 game won by Cougars, 69-65, at Davis High School. They’ll again meet at the Pirate Ship at 4 Saturday.

SCAC runner-up Royal (20-4), making its first state berth in 25 years, is seeded fifth and will head west to play No. 4 Annie Wright (18-5) at 6 p.m. Friday at University of Puget Sound.

Wapato earned its bid with a win Saturday, and will need one more victory to reach the SunDome. The 11th-seeded Wolves (20-5) will be the home team against No. 14 Bear Creek (12-11) at 8 Friday after the boys play.
