Standish's big night lifts Ellensburg past Deer Park
WV, Grandview boys fall into play-in; Ike girls, Sunnyside boys ousted

SPOKANE – Ellensburg junior Bella Standish enjoyed one of the biggest nights in the program’s history Saturday.
The program enjoyed one of its biggest wins because of her heroics.
Standish poured in 35 points – the second-most of her career fourth in school history – to lead the seventh-seeded Bulldogs to a 58-49 victory against No. 2 Deer Park in the Class 2A state tournament opening round at West Valley High School in Spokane.
The Bulldogs advance to a Thursday quarterfinal in the Yakima Valley SunDome. They’ll meet the winner of No. 8 Selah and ninth-seeded Fife.
Ellie Markus added 14 points for Ellensburg (20-5), which has won eight of its last nine games.
Jacey Boesel topped the Stags (21-3) with 27, and Emma Bryant added 15.
Grandview boys fall on the road
KELSO – Seventh-seeded Grandview held R.A. Long to its second lowest scoring total of the season in Saturday’s opening round game at Kelso High School.
Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, they couldn’t get their offense going either and fell to the Lumberjacks 49-38.
Frankie Medina scored 15 points for Grandview (18-7), which will meet 15th-seeded Foster in Wednesday’s play-in round at 5:30 p.m. The winner advances to meet top-seeded and defending champion Bremerton in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
CLASS 4A
West Valley can’t maintain quick start
ISSAQUAH – Eighth-seeded West Valley led by 10 points early, before No. 1 Mount Si rallied for an 80-71 victory in the opening round of the Class 4A boys state tournament at Issaquah High School.
Jrayden Whitfield knocked down six 3-pointers and scored a team-best 20 points for the Rams (19-3), who will face ninth-ranked Auburn at 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the winner advancing to a quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 Richland on Thursday night.
Austin Birley had 17 points and Parker Mills added 16 for West Valley.
Lattimore Ford scored 28 points, and Brady Hennig had 24 for the Wildcats (22-4).
Sunnsyide’s season ends
AUBURN – Ninth-seeded Auburn raced past No. 16 Sunnyside on Saturday night in the opening round.
Junior Aiden Sanchez, the CBBN’s leading scorer, had 26 points to lead the Grizzlies, who finished the season 15-9.
Ike Weets and Dominick Salinas added 10 points for Sunnyside.
Daniel Johnson scored 20 points for the Trojans (22-3).
Cadets fall in opener
AUBURN – Eisenhower’s return to the state tournament ended Saturday with a 61-33 loss to Auburn.
The Cadets (14-10) had won 7 of 8 games to earn their first state berth since 2006.
