YAKIMA – The Grandview boys basketball team has experienced pretty much everything this year.
The Greyhounds had to replace a good chunk of their roster after graduation hit hard.
They watched as their all-conference point guard was twice sidelined with an ankle injury, and another teammate was hospitalized and unavailable for the state tournament.
And once in the tournament, Grandview had to face the No. 1 and 2 teams.
Yet, after all that, the seventh-seeded Greyhounds will be taking home a state trophy, The denomination of that award will be decided Saturday against Tumwater at 9:30 a.m.
All-CWAC first-teamer Frankie Medina, destined to be an all-tournament pick when it’s announced Saturday, scored a game-high 22 points on 9 of 17 shooting, and Grandview (20-8) cruised to a 58-36 victory
“I don’t even think I’ve had time to process it, we’re just rolling with,” Grandview coach Frankie Medina said. “I told the boys, you look at our road and we had a tough road, we lost to the 1 and 2, but we bounced back and made it to the trophy round and that’s an accomplishment.”
The younger Medina has averaged 28 points in the Greyhounds’ three games in the SunDome, and Friday it was on 9 of 17 shooting.
“After all he went through with the injured ankle, for him to show up healthy and play the way he did, I’m just happy for him,” Coach Medina said of his son.
Braden Santos added 12 points and six rebounds, and Darius Montelongo had 10 points for Grandview, which opened a 10-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
The Greyhounds again were without Deontae Howard, a second-team all-conference selection. He was released from the hospital after treatment for an infection, and was on the bench for Thursday’s quarterfinal against Bremerton.
