YAKIMA – The Selah girls basketball team made its first trip the state tournament in 45 years a fruitful one.
The eighth-seeded Vikings edged No. 5 Archbishop Murphy, 50-48, in consolation play Friday morning, to advance to Saturday’s trophy round of the Class 2A tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Selah (21-9) will meet second-seeded Deer Park (23-4) for fourth and sixth place at 8 a.m. The Stags beat the Vikings 56-45 in the SunDome Shootout in late December.
The Vikings built an 11-point lead in the third quarter, before the Wildcats, led by Santa Clara-bound standout Brooke Blachley and her game-high 30 points, rallied, eventually tying the score, 48-48.
With 14 seconds remaining, though, junior Elise Kingston scored on a layup to give Selah the lead.
Archbishop Murphy missed a would-be game-tying shot.
“It’s great to be able to bring some hardware back to Selah,” said Selah coach Ray Navarro, the CWAC Coach of the Year. “For our seniors to start off 4–16 and finish their senior year placing at state, I’m glad they were able to experience the fruits of their labor.”
Kingston led the Vikings with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting, and snared seven rebounds. Sophomore Makenna Pepper sank 4 of 7 seven shots – including two 3-pointers – for 10 points, and senior Braylee Pendleton added six rebounds and three assits.
“We’ve played RPI No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 ranked teams,” Navarro said. “We’re battle-tested, and it showed up in the tournament. I couldn’t more proud of our players and coaching staff.”
