This spring’s Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame induction will be heavy on Central Washington enshrinees.
Brandie Valadez, one of the top athletes to come through Zillah High School before returning to the school to guide the Leopards girls basketball team for 13 seasons who passed last summer after a lengthy battle with cancer, will be part of the class of six.
The group of six coaches includes West Valley graduate Alyssa Goins, who guided La Salle to two unbeaten championship seasons, and Toppenish High graduate Andy Affholter, who turned an almost-always-undersized Granger quad into a perennial state contender.
The ceremony is scheduled for May 9 at Gonzaga Prep.
Valadez led Zillah to 244 victories, four district championships and nine trips to the state tournament, where the Leopards captured three state trophies, including a fourth-place finish in 2025.
She was the inspiration for this year’s Zillah squad which won last month’s Class 1A state championship as the second seed with Joel Yellow Owl at the helm.
Goins coached the Lightning boys program for one season, before taking the girls reins.
She continued the success the program had under Todd Kent, winning the 2008 2B championship to cap a 24-0 season.
A move to 1A didn’t slow La Salle, which won the 2019 championship with a 27-0 record, beating powerful Lynden Christian in the championship after topping Cashmere and star Hailey Van Lith in the semifinals.
Goins’ teams won nearly 300 games, 15 conference championships, eight district titles and seven tournament trophies.
After success leading the Mabton boys program, Affholter took over a s Granger program that hadn’t won a state trophy since the late 1970s and made the Spartans one of the state’s top 1A programs.
Granger won 260 games, nine state trophies in a 10-year span, including back-to-back championship-game appearances in 2009 and 2010 under his guidance.
The Spartans were often well shorter than their opponent but overcame the height disparity with shooting, defense and tenacity.
Affholter has been remained a fixture at the state tournaments in the Yakima Valley SunDome, helping run the boys court.
