YAKIMA – Since Davis High School already was hosting Saturday’s SWX All-Star Classic, the six Pirates playing in the doubleheader went ahead and made the event their own showcase.

A trio of juniors from Davis’ back-to-back Class 4A state champion girls squad – Isa Garcia, Cheyenne Hull and Kobe Johnson – led the Yakima squad to a 98-72 victory, the only drama being whether the home team could hit the century mark.

The boys followed with an even more lopsided victory with three more Pirates – seniors Damian Pimentel and D’Anthony Wiggins, and sophomore Marcus Smith – teaming with West Valley star sophomore Austin Birley to help wallop the Tri-Cities 123-82.

It was dominance from the get-go in the girls game. Yakima scored the first 11 points and was never threatened.

Sunnyside boys coach Brice Siebol guided the Yakima girls because of limitations of coaching their own players in the offseason.

He presented the Yakima players with a challenge, and they responded.

“I told them, ‘You know what? You can all shoot, let’s see if you can guard people,’ and they went out and really set the tone,” Siebol said. “They’re good, they really are good. The whole team is really talented.”

Garcia scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half, matching Hull for game-high honors, and repeating as the game’s MVP.

“I’ve grown up with them, playing with them and playing against them, and nobody was too unfamiliar,” Garcia said of her teammates,

Hull had 10 points in the fourth, a couple times taking long passes from Garcia for layups. The two-time CBBN Player of the Year and 4A state tournament MVP did her early damage on the defensive end and boards, notching many of her six steals and nine rebounds.

Johnson added 13 points for Yakima, which also got big contributions from Zillah 1A champions Makenna Klitzke (nine points) and Bella Valadez (eight).

CWAC Player of the Year Herbie Wright chipped in nine points, and Bella Standish had eight.

Walla Walla’s Bridget Boyd topped the Tri-Cities with 16 points.

The boys game was more competitive – at least for the first quarter.

Yakima led by four points after the opening period, but outscored Tri-Cities 33-13 in the second quarter.

Smith hit three of his four 3-pointers before halftime and had 11 of his 14 points.

Pimentel knocked down all four of his 3s after intermission, and finished with 16 points.

And Wiggins, who had two points, helped provide the final highlight of the first half, blocking a shot, then sending a pass to Grandview’s Braden Santos, who dunked seconds before the horn.

Like the girls, the Yakima boys showed just enough defense to make a difference while not slowing the free flow of the all-star format.

“You get those Lower Valley kids, that’s what they want to do anyway – pressure for 48 feet – and then you have finished like Austin, and it makes your life easy,” Yakima boys coach and reigning WSGBCA Coach of the Year Akil White said.

Birley scored a game-high 21 points showing his full repertoire – slashing, dunking and shooting. The Rams sophomore canned four 3-pointers.

“It’s really fun to get to play with all the players in Yakima,” he said. “I really like playing on teams with good players, that’s when I think I play best.”

Selah junior Jaxon Benge, who was recruited to the team Friday night, scored 14 points, and Eisenhower’s Lucas Stevens added 13 points.

Wapato’s T Fiander had a couple dunks en route to 10 points, catching White’s eye along the way.

“It was fun for me to get to see kids I’ve never seen,” White said.
