West Valley, Zillah baseball teams move into top 10s

Unbeaten Rams, Leopards join VarsityWA rakings, top-five matchup set in CWAC

Unbeaten West Valley and Zillah, which split a doubleheader with top-five Cashmere joined the VarsityWA baseball rankings Monday.


The 2A poll sets up a top-five matchup Saturday between CWAC teams.


Eighth in the Class 4A rankings, the Rams improved to 6-0 for the season Saturday when they topped defending Greater St. Helens League champion Camas, 7-2.


West Valley, which is No. 10 in the all-classifications Washington Baseball Report Power 25, is a game and a half behind Moses Lake and Eastmont, who are 6-0 in conference having played three more CBBN games than the Rams.


The Wildcats visits West Valley on Tuesday to begin the three-game series between the two teams. The Rams visit Eastmont on Friday.


Zillah made its 1A poll debut at No. 8 after taking the opener Saturday at third-ranked Cashmere, 7-2. The Bulldogs bounced back from back there first loss of the season by taking the second game, 14-4.


The Leopards, whose only other losses came to 2B No. 1 and three-time defending champion Tri-Cities Prep, and Cashmere are tied with Naches Valley atop the SCAC at 5-1.


Othello, third at last year’s 2A state tournament, is No. 3 in the rankings. Right behind the Huskies is East Valley, which moved up four spots form No. 8.


The Red Devils head to Othello on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Ellensburg, which swept Selah on Saturday, is just outside the top 10.

West Valley is No. 8 in 4A while Othello and East Valley at third and fourth, respectively, in the 2A. Joining the Huskies and Red Devils is Ellensburg, which check in at No. 7.


In 1A, Cashmere is third and Zillah seventh.


The Evans Rankings are pulled together by Matt Evans of the Tri-Cities. He uses a formula that weighs the team’s winning percentage and those of the team’s opponents and the opponent’s opponents.
