YAKIMA – The matchup of CWAC's fastpitch heavyweights produced a couple of early knockouts – and plenty of home runs.

East Valley, ranked 10th in the VarsityWA Class 2A rankings, and Selah split a doubleheader Tuesday, the Red Devils winning the opener 11-0 in five innings, and the Vikings following with another 10-run-rule shortened victory, 14-3.

The teams combined for eight home runs, with six of them – five by the Vikings – coming in the second gamer when the wind kicked up, making every fly ball a threat to clear the fence.

“We knew it was going to be a back and forth, it just depends on who brings the energy,” said Selah coach Courtney Williams, noting how the top of her order has been mashing the ball this season.

“They’re sharing the love with balls out of the park right now,” she said. “It’s been pretty cool. It’s not just one, it’s multiple of them.”

Selah leadoff hitter Aspin Grubenhoff provided the biggest blasts. Her grand slam keyed a six-run third inning for the Viks, and she hit a two-run shot an inning later.

Grubenhoff added a triple in the first inning and finished with six RBI.

Michigan-bound slugger Avery Brewer also  smacked a pair of homers, one with two runners aboard.

The onslaught, which was aided by Kyra Ruddick’s two-run HR, backed Hailey Christianson’s strong pitching effort. Christianson scattered five hits and struck out five, and had error-free defense behind her.

“You can’t ask anything more from her,” Williams said. “She doesn’t throw super hard all the time, but she lets her defense work.”

It was the Presley Weatherley Show in the opener. The senior shut down the Vikings, allowing just three hits – none of them for extra innings – and struck out five batters, three of them looking.

She helped her cause with two-run and solo homers for the Red Devils, who also took advantage of four Selah fielding miscues.

“The top of the lineup is doing what it’s supposed to do, and she’s locked in the circle, too,” East Valley coach Jason Ramynke said.

Sophiya Castaneda added two hits, and Kendall Palmanteer doubled in the opener.

The Red Devils remain alone in first place in the CWAC ad 11-1 in conference play and 13-5 overall.

Their challenging week continues Saturday when they head to Ellensburg for a doubleheader. The Bulldogs swept Grandview on Tuesday, and is 8-2 in CWAC play.

“We’ve had this week circled on our calendar since the beginning of the season because we knew Selah and Ellensburg are going to be our competition at the top of the league,” said Ramynke, who knows he'll have to make sure his team is dialed in against the Bulldogs.

“It’s our prom day, so we got to focus on our games for the morning and the afternoon, and then we can enjoy our prom,” he said.

The Vikings are 9-1 in conference contests and 10-2 overall, with fourth-place Othello visiting Ruth Harris Field on Saturday.
