To find its new football coach, Othello High School went to college.

The Huskies hired Jerome Learman, who has spent the last four years as the director of applied performance science for the University of Tennessee football team in Knoxville.

Learman holds a doctor of philosophy degree and a master of science in kinesiology from Michigan State. He also had roles in sports science at his alma mater and the universities of Louisville and Utah.

His coaching experience includes leading the programs at Lake Michigan Catholic High School and Dansville (Mich.) High School, and the Osan Middle High School in South Korea, where also served as athletic director.

“Coach Learman brings a rare combination of elite academic preparation, extensive coaching experience, and high-level sports science expertise to Othello,” the school said in a release. “His background in sports performance, athlete development, and data-driven training will enhance the standard of preparation for Othello student-athletes.”

Othello athletic director Carlos Gonzalez said Learman learned about the position in Eastern Washington he’s worked with, and he applied, went through the interview process and was hired. Gonzalez said Learman will likely move to the area from Tennessee later this spring.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Learman to Othello High School football,” the release said. “His experience, leadership, and vision for student-athlete development make him an outstanding fit for our program and community.”

Learman takes the reins from Hall of Fame coach Roger Hoell, who retired after 31 seasons and 238 victories.

Under Hoell, the Huskies have qualified the state playoffs the past six seasons, and advanced to the state semifinals five times, and the Class 2A championship three times with state titles in 2004 and 1998.
