Moses Lake is keeping it in the family.
Mavericks receivers coach Kyler Haneberg, a former standout wideout at the school, was promoted to head coach Friday.
He takes over for CBBN Coach of the Year Brett Jay, who stepped down after guiding the Mavericks to an 11-1 record and a quarterfinal berth with record-setting quarterback – and son – Brady Jay leading the way.
Haneberg is a 2018 Moses Lake graduate and was a first-team all-CBBN receiver as a senior, catching passes from MVP Brandon Griffith for the conference champions under coach Todd Griffith.
“It means everything to me,” Haneberg said. “I love my community, and this program helped me become the man that I am today. So, this is my way of giving back and helping build the next generation of Moses Lake.”
While graduation will claim Jay, top receivers Grant Smith and Carter Anderson, and a few others, the cupboard is hardly bare for the Mavericks.
Linebacker John Rainey, the reigning conference Defensive Player of the Year, will be a junior, while Elijah Burns, a first-team all-purpose selection after totaling more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage (957 receiving, 547 rushing) and 14 touchdowns.
First-team all-conference offensive lineman Reese Porter and Conner Reed, and defensive standouts Petrah MacKenzie and Taggart Rathbun will be seniors next season.
“He Is an outstanding young coach that will take Moses Lake football to the level,” Brett Jay said. “He woks on improving every phase of the program year-round. He lives football.
“I am excited to see him work.”
