YAKIMA – Second-year West Valley baseball coach Brooks Archer has yet to lose a conference game – 30 up, 30 down – and has his team riding a 34-game regular season winning streak.
What’s been key to the Rams winning in big ways is doing all the little things.
“It’s taking care of everything we can control, and to focus on the details,” he said. “Baseball is a crazy game. We saw that our last game against Eisenhower.”
Down 3-2 in the top of the sixth, West Valley used a five-run rally en route to a 7-3 victory against the Cadets, its 30thstraight in CBBN play.
Key to that victory and the Rams being 12-0 in conference and 15-0 overall has been contributions from up and down the batting order, and stellar pitching from many.
West Valley has 10 or more hits in seven games, and just one with less than six, and 10 Rams have multi-hit games this season, with Colby Graham leading the way with seven such outings, including a pair of three-hit games.
Alex Morales has six multi-hit games, Colton Worley four and three apiece for Drayden Birley and Karter Huwe.
On the mound, reigning CBBN Pitcher of the Year Rhyse Elder has led the charge. The junior has given up earned runs just once in seven outings.
In conference play, Elder has been dominating, giving up just three hits in 16 innings, while striking out 35 against just four walks.
Graham, Ryan Rhoads and Brody Vigansky have bolstered the pitching.
“It’s been a total team effort,” Archer said. “If we’re going to make a run, it’s going to be all 20 guys.”
West Valley, ranked fifth in VarsityWA’s Class 4A top 10 and No. 3 in Prep Baseball Report’s all-classifications rankings, opens a three-game series Tuesday at Moses Lake, and host the Mavericks for a doubleheader Friday.
Next week, the Rams cap the regular season with three games against Wenatchee.
Both the Mavs and Panthers are tied with Eastmont for second place in the CBBN at 9-3 in conference play.
“I like finishing that way,” Archer said of facing the toughest competition at the end of the league slate. “It’s good to see where we are at this point of the season.”
In the CWAC, Othello (12-1 CWAC, 15-3 overall) can gain a share of the conference championship Tuesday with a home win against Selah. The Huskies can earn its first outright championship since 2003 on Saturday against Toppenish.
Othello, which also won the 2A state championship in 2003, is up to third in VarsityWA poll and 16th in the Prep Baseball Report top 25.
Cashmere is No. 2 in the 1A VarsityWA poll and RPI rankings. The Bulldogs (12-1 SCAC, 16-1 overall) cap the conference schedule with a doubleheader against Wahluke on Tuesday, and two against Kiona-Benton on Friday.
Zillah (12-4) is tied with Cashmere, and ranked ninth. The Leopards host Wapato on Tuesday and Connelle on Friday.
