Othello freshman Yaritzi Flores-Romero, a state tournament-qualifying wrestler for the powerful Huskies program, was one of three teen girls from the school killed Sunday afternoon when the former boyfriend of one of them allegedly crashed into the truck in which they were riding.
The truck went off the road and rolled into an irrigation canal, ejecting all three girls who died at the scene, according to Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Also killed were Melissa Romero-Espinoza and Iris Ramos Cruz.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release the names of the victims because they are minors, however they were identified in social media posts and on fundraising sites.
On its Facebook page, Othello Lady Huskies Wrestling posted:
“Our Othello wrestling community has lost a truly special teammate. Yari represented our team with unmatched tenacity and fearless determination. Even as a freshman, she was a role model in the wrestling room -- someone others looked up to and drew energy from because of her aggressive, relentless style. She will be missed not only as a fierce competitor, but as a genuine, fun-loving young woman who always carried a smile. We will remember her humor, her spirit, and her constant hunger to improve.
“Yari, you will forever be missed and thank you for sharing your love of the sport with all of us.”
Flores-Romero placed fourth in the CWAC district tournament at 115 pounds. She was seeded 15th at Mat Classic XXXVII in the Tacoma Dome in February.
She won her opening match at the state showcase, and another in the consolation bracket.
The school remained on schedule Monday, although planned state testing was postponed, and counseling services were made for students and staff at all of the district’s schools.
“Our hearts are with their families, friends, and all who knew and loved them,” Othello School District superintendent Pat Perez wrote in a post on the district’s Facebook page. “This loss is being felt across our schools and throughout our community, and we recognize that many are grieving.”
Presiliano Perez-Pineda, a 19-year-old Othello resident, was arrested Sunday in the incident. He appeared Monday in Adams County Superior Court in Ritzville, where his bail was set at $1 million, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
He is charged with three counts of vehicular homicide, with one of the counts carrying a domestic violence enhancement because of his previous relationship with one of the girls.
It is alleged that Perez-Pineda, driving a Mercedes sedan, crashed into the driver’s side of the truck, causing it to leave the roadway.
