Former Sunnyside standout Ethan Copeland has heard from several schools – including perennial West Coast Conference power and Pac-12 addition Gonzaga – since entering the transfer portal following his junior season at Stetson.
The 6-foot-2 guard reportedly had a Zoom call with Gonzaga, and also is receiving interest from schools such as Virginia Commonwealth, Marshall, Loyola Marymount and Pacific.
Copeland was one of the top shooters in the country this past winter for the Hatters. He shot 42.9% from 3-point range, which ranked 16thin the country, and made 3.3 3s per game, which ranked 15th.
He averaged 15.0 points per game, along with 3.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals.
Copeland averaged nearly 27 points per game as a junior with the Grizzlies, before transferring to Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah, when the prep basketball season in Washington state was delayed and then shortened because of Covid-19.
He held Sunnyside’s single-game scoring record of 42 points with Trey Sanchez and Larry Den Boer, before Aiden Sanchez poured in 49 during a December game.
After a two-year mission, Copeland played a season each at Utah State Eastern and Salt Lake Community College before heading to Stetson.
If Copeland were to end up with the Zags, he might take the minutes left when Ellensburg graduate and former Big Sky Player of the Year Steele Venters transferred to Washington after three years at Gonzaga, the first two spent recovering from knee injuries.
Venters started 10 games for the Bulldogs and averaged 5.0 points, before his playing time diminished, and he entered the portal.
Another Ellensburg alum – Gavin Marrs – found a landing spot after entering the transfer portal. Marrs committed to the Atlantic 10’s Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia, after spending two seasons at Oregon State.
He played in 10 games this past season, after appearing in 25 games and scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds as a freshman.
