ELLENSBURG – East Valley senior Brandon Stone pitched the third-seeded Red Devils past No. 2 Ellensburg on Tuesday in the first round of the CWAC district at Rotary Park.

The Washington State-bound right-hander tossed 6 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and striking out 10 batters against four walks to earn the win and send East Valley to the semifinals, where they’ll host the winner of fourth-seeded Selah and No. 5 Prosser at 1 p.m. Saturday at Loftus Field.

The winner of that games earned a trip to the district final and a state berth.

Jaxon Beyerlein came in to strike out the lone batter he faced, with the tying run on first, to record the save.

Jaxon Berg broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second with an RBI single that scored Liam Peterson to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

After Ellensburg scored a run on an error in the third to tie the score, Jake Jansen’s bunt single in the sixth allowed Peterson to score again, and Stone and Beyerlein made it hold up.

Berg and Jansen each had two hits for the East Valley (14-6), and Carter Peone was 1 for 2 with two walks for the Bulldogs (13-7).

HUSKIES ROLL: At Othello, Ryan Martinez smacked a grand slam to key a seven-run fifth inning as top-seeded and third-ranked Othello (19-3) overcame a two-run deficit and advanced to the semifinals with a 9-2 victory against No. 4 Selah at home.

Xzyvynn Martinez surrendered two runs in the top of the first inning, the first earned runs he’s given up this season against a CWAC opponent.

He helped his cause with an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single an inning later.

Christian Keller plated a pair of runs in the first inning with a single for the Vikings (13-8).

In the play-in contests, fifth-seeded Prosser (11-11) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped by Justin Perkins’ one-run double to beat No. 8 Ephrata (4-18), 4-3, to stay alive.

The Mustangs will meet Selah at 11 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out contest at Loftus Field, with the winner to meet East Valley in a semifinal.

Elsewhere, seventh-seeded Quincy overcame an early 3-0 deficit to beat Grandview, 5-4.

Barnes Keller had three hits, including a double, and knocked in a pair of runs, and Caleb Kukes had two hits and two RBI for the Jackrabbits (8-6).

Quincy will visit second-seeded Ellensburg at 11 a.m. Saturday for a spot in the semifinals.

Cubie Castro has two hits, one of them a double, and knocked in a run for the Greyhounds (9-12), and Xathian Castro had two hits including a double.
