Fourth-ranked West Valley rides Elder to home victory

Rams open final CBBN series with shutout against Panthers, improve to 19-0

YAKIMA – The West Valley baseball team moved to within two victories of its second straight unbeaten run through the CBBN with a 4-0 victory against Wenatchee on Tuesday to open the regular-season capping series.


Reigning CBBN Pitcher of the Yeat Rhyse Elder limited the Panthers to just three hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out 14 batters while walking just one for the defending league champions.


The Rams, who wrapped up the regular-season title and district No. 1 seed with last week’s sweep of Moses Lake, head to Wenatchee on Friday for a doubleheader.


Noah Soptich started the game for West Valley and pitched two-thirds on an inning in a scheduled short start after returning from an injury, before giving way to Elder.


The right-hander retired the Panthers in order in three of the six innings he pitched.


Colton Worley had two hits and a pair of RBI for the Rams (16-0 CBBN, 19-0 overall), who also got a double from Drayden Birley and RBI from Caleb Lindner.


In other action, in a matchup that could very well decide the second berth in the CBBN district final, Moses Lake took the series opener at Eastmont, 9-7.


Jonny Purcell, last year’s CBBN Offensive Player of the Year, had three hits, stole two bases. scored three runs and knocked in two more for the Mavericks (10-6, 10-8), who held off the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh.


Noah Hernandez added two hits and two RBI for Moses Lake.


Izik Ontiveros had a two-run homer and Bodie Yale added a two-run double for Eastmont (11-5, 11-7).


Moses Lake hosts Eastmont for a doubleheader Friday.


In the other contest, Juan Herrera triples, doubled and tripled and knocked in two runs as Eisenhower (4-12, 4-14) beat Sunnyside, 9-4.


Victor Garcia added a two-run double for the Cadets, and Andrew Roy struck out 13 and gave up just one run in six innings.


Christian Casas had two RBI for the Grizzlies (2-14, 2-16).


In fastpitch action, Zabella Hickenbottom homered, doubled drove in three runs and scored four more to lead Eisenhower (3-8 CBBN, 8-10 overall) to a 12-4 victory against Sunnyside (2-9. 9-10).
