ELLENSBURG – Third-seeded Ellensburg beat No. 6 Othello 3-2 on penalty kicks Tuesday to stay alive in the CWAC district soccer tournament.

The Bulldogs (8-7-1) advances to the semifinals, where they’ll visit top-seeded Toppenish (11-5-1) on Saturday.

Also Tuesday, Eduardo Perez scored twice and Grandview (4-4, 9-4-2) beat Quincy 2-1 in a loser-out contest.

The Greyhounds head to East Valley on Tuesday for a semifinal.

Winners of Saturday’s semifinals earn a berth in the Class 2A state tournament.

The District 5 1A state tournament got going with eight play-in games, all but one that was won by the higher-seeded team.

Top-seeded Cashmere rolled past Granger, 5-0, and No. 2 seed Royal rolled past Oroville 6-0.

There are 16 teams in the district bracket, as both the SCAC and Caribou Trail League include teams from 2B and 1B.

In CBBN action, Johnny Licona found the net four times to lead Sunnyside to a 4-0 victory against West Valley.
