Selah rallies, East Valley rolls to open district fastpitch tourney

Vikings slug four HRs, Red Devils get stellar outing from Ramynke andtop seeds move on

SELAH – Payton Brown delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Selah its first lead and the second-seeded Vikings rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat Ellensburg 9-5 in Wednesday’s first round of the CWAC district tournament.


Aspin Grubenhoff hit a two-run home and Avery Brewer added a solo shot, her second of the game, in the sixth inning for the Viks (17-3).


Selah advances to Saturday’s semifinals where at 1 p.m. it will meet the winner between Ephrata and Prosser, which proceeds the semi at Ruth Harris Field at Carlon Park.


The Bulldogs jumped on Selah, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, keyed by Miley Porter’s RBI singles, and a walk by Addison Oehlerich to push across another run.


The conference co-champions answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, keyed by Kymbree Brost’s homer to center field, and tied the score in the third on Brewer’s first HR.


Ava Stueckle’s RBI single in the fourth gave Ellensburg (16-6) the lead again.


Lylie Colton added two hits for Selah, while Porter had three and Kylie Ayling two for the Bulldogs.

EAST VALLEY 10, EPHRATA 0: At Yakima, Brooklynn Root hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, Leila Cook added a solo blast in the fourth and senior Tia Ramynke pitched four shutout innings as East Valley rolled into the semifinals.


The Red Devils will host the winner of Ellensburg and Othello at 1 p.m. Saturday. The matchup between the Bulldogs and Huskies is slated for 11 a.m.


Cook finished with three hits, two runs and two RBI, and Elise Heater also knocked in two runs.


Sophiya Castaneda doubled and scored twice, and Presley Weatherley also had two runs for East Valley (17-4).


Ramynke struck out nine batters and did not walk anybody, and Root fanned two of the four batters she faced in the fifth,


Cami Martinez had two hits, including a double, for the Tigers (10-12), who’ll meet Prosser in Prosser on Saturday in Selah.

In the play-in contests, Othello’s Alexa Prochet tossed a five-inning no-hitter striking out 10 batters and walking none.


Jena DeLeon had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run, Alizay Pruneda had an RBI double and drove in two runs, and Kenzie Martinez added a two-run double for the Huskies (9-11).


Layla Barnhart’s two-run single gave Prosser (9-13) a 5-4 walk-off victory against Grandview (5-17). Brianna Barriga had two hits and an RBI for the Greyhounds.
