Kibbe powers Leopards, McDevitt leads Cashmere in district openers
Zillah senior smacks grand slam, while SCAC Player of the Year does it all for Bulldogs

ZILLAH – Zillah senior Nathan Kibbe opened the district tournament with a bang Thursday.
Kibbe hit a grand slam to key an 11-run fourth inning as the second-seeded Leopards overcame an early deficit to beat No. 7 seed College Place 16-6,
Zillah, ranked sixth in this week’s VarsityWA poll, advances to Saturday’s semifinals where sixth-seeded Connell awaits. The winner earns a spot in the championship game and a state berth.
A first-team selection on this spring’s all-SCAC team, Kibbe collected four hits, one of them a double, drove in five runs and scored three more.
Kyson Bass added three hits and an RBI, Blake Groeneweg had a two-run double, and Caleb Rutherford collected three hits, including a triple, and knocked in a run for the Leopards (17-4).
Jayj Gallegos gave up five earned runs in the first two innings before settling to strike out six and earn the win.
The Hawks (8-13) were led by Brandon Fry’s two hits and two RBI.
CASHMERE 14, OMAK 0: At Cashmere, the tournament’s top seed rolled in its quarterfinal with two-time SCAC Player of the Year Tom McDevitt getting three hits, including an RBI double, drove in three runs and tossing a two-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Jacoby Taits added a two-run single, doubled and knocked in three runs, Ethan Bessonette had two hits, three runs and an RBI, and Mac Carlson went 2 for 4 for the Bulldogs (21-1), who will meet fourth-seeded Chelan in Saturday’s semifinals.
CONNELL 4, ROYAL 2: At Royal, the sixth-seeded Eagles upended the No. 3 Knights, behind a three-run fifth inning.
Tucker Thomasson had an RBI single in the rally, and Connell (13-8) also scored on a wild pitch and error. Tomasson had two hits and Hunter Erickson added an RBI single.
Tyce Christensen and Karson Thompson each knocked in a run the third-seeded Knights (12-9), who will host College Place in a loser-out contest Saturday.
CHELAN 3, NACHES VALLEY 2: At Chelan, the Goats scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to advance to the semifinals.
Caden Rowe had two hits, including an RBI double, for the Rangers (10-12), who will entertain Omak in a loser-out game Saturday.
