YAKIMA — East Valley secured its second straight 4-1 win on Saturday, defeating Grandview in the CWAC district tournament semifinals and wrapping up a state tournament bid in the process.

Sophomore Adrian Cuevas scored two first-half goals, senior Jace Cuevas converted a penalty kick, and senior Romeo Olivas added an insurance goal in the 67th minute to help the No. 2 Red Devils advance to the district championship game at No. 1 seed Toppenish on Tuesday.

“We could’ve played better and put more goals in, but we’re feeling pretty good overall,” Jace Cuevas said. “This gives us really good momentum heading into the next game, and we feel like we’re ready.”

The Red Devils defeated the Wildcats 3-0 at home on April 2.

East Valley, which missed out on the No. 1 seed with a 4-1 loss to Ellensburg on the final day of the regular season, appears to have rediscovered its form in the past two games, dominating possession and locking in on defense.

“That loss to Ellensburg was a wake-up call for us, honestly,” Cuevas said. “We went into that game thinking we were the better team, but losing to them showed us that we just have to go out and play to the best of our ability every time. From now on, it’s go-go-go.”

East Valley responded with a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs on May 2 at home and carried their momentum into Saturday’s win over Grandview. Vicente Carrasco scored an unassisted goal for the fifth-seeded Greyhounds, who will face Ellensburg in a loser-out contest Tuesday.

TOPPENISH 6, ELLENSBURG 1: At Toppenish, Luis Ramos scored a hat trick to help the top-seeded Wildcats cruise past No. 3 Ellensburg in Saturday’s other CWAC semifinal.

The Bulldogs took an early lead when Alejandro Jasso scored his Valley-leading 17th goal in the fourth minute, but Kristian Iniguez pulled Toppenish even with a tally in the 21st. Ramos gave the Wildcats a 3-1 halftime lead with goals in the 30th and 35th, and then added his 16th goal of the season in the 55th minute.

Santos Guel and Maui Martinez also scored for Top-Hi, which will host No. 2 seed East Valley in Tuesday’s district championship game.

Wildcats goalkeeper Angel Ambriz nabbed two saves and Parker Sterkel hauled in seven for Ellensburg, which will host Grandview on Tuesday for a chance to play in a winner-to-state crossover against the third-place finisher from District 1.

WAPATO STAYS ALIVE, EARNS STATE BERTH: At Okanogan, Wapato made the most of its more than three-hour trip, beating Okanogan on penalty kicks after the scored was tied after regulation and overtime.

The Wolves (12-7) earned a berth in the Class 1A state tournament, and will meet Tonasket next Saturday for fifth and sixth place in the district.

The Tigers defeated Wahluke 2-0 to advance. The Warriors finished the season 12-5-1.
