Eight area teams in VarsityWA baseball, softball top 10s

Five ranked teams playing for district titles, four already bound for state tourneys

Five of the eight teams from the Stat Hound footprint ranked in Monday’s VarsityWA baseball and softball top 10s will be playing for district championships this week, and four of them already have earned state berths.


West Valley, which completed its second straight unbeaten run through the CBBN with a sweep at Wenatchee, remains No. 4 in the Class 4A rankings.


The Rams (21-0 overall) hosts Moses Lake on Friday, looking to repeat as district champions. West Valley swept the season series, needing a pair of two-run home runs from Rhyse Elder to take both ends of the doubleheader at home.


In the CWAC, Othello dropped a spot to No. 3 in the 2A rankings after losing 5-1 to Ellensburg in a CWAC district semifinal Saturday.


On Tuesday, the Huskies will meet East Valley, which was just outside of the top 10, in an elimination game. The winner will meet a team from the Northwest Conference for a berth in the state tournament.


The Bulldogs will host Selah, which topped the Red Devils in Saturday’s semifinals, in Tuesday’s district championship at 4:30 p.m. Both teams have earned spots in the


Saturday’s SCAC championship game with be a matchup of top-10 teams. Cashmere remains No. 2 in 1A. and will meet sixth-ranked Zillah in the finale of a SCAC tripleheader Saturday at Ephrata’s Johnson-O’Brien Stadium.


The Bulldogs (22-1), who have won 16 straight games, and Leopards split their early April doubleheader.


No CBBN fastpitch teams are in the top 10 after West Valley, Eastmont and Moses Lake tied for first place at 10-2 in conference play.


The Rams were seeded No. 1 in the district bracket on the second tiebreaker – run differential – after the teams split the doubleheaders between them.


East Valley (18-4) is No. 10 in the 2A rankings. The Red Devils are the top seed in the CWAC district tournament, and travel to Carlon Park on Tuesday to meet second-seeded Selah (18-3) in the championship game.


Three SCAC teams are in the 1A top 10, led by fifth-place College Place (21-2), which powered its way to the SCAC championship where the Bulldogs will meet upstart Naches Valley (10-12) on Saturday at Yakima’s Gateway Sports Complex. Both teams already have earned state berths.


The Rangers are just outside the top 10 after upsetting second-seeded Royal (16-7) and No. 3 seed Chelan.


The Knights and Ki-Be can earn trips to the winners-to-state crossovers with Northeast 1A teams with victories Saturday.
