West Valley softball coach Brad Cramer and his Rams had to play the waiting game this past weekend for the seeding of the CBBN district tournament to get sorted out.

Eastmont and Moses Lake, too, were part of the three-way tie atop the conference standings. The Rams, Wildcats and Mavericks all finished 10-2, and were headed to a tiebreaker.

Step 1: Head-to-head. No help here, as all three doubleheaders between the schools were splits.

Step 2: Point differential. Seems easy enough, unless you’re Eastmont athletic director Russ Waterman, who oversees fastpitch for the CBBN.

“You should see the math!” he messaged Saturday.

All the ciphering done, West Valley emerged the No. 1 seed, followed by Eastmont and Moses Lake.

In terms of the CBBN bracket, the difference between the top two seeds and the third is huge. The Rams and Wildcats will have to win just one of a possible two games to get to the state tournament May 22-23 at the Columbia Playfields in Richland.

The Mavericks will have to win twice to get one shot at state.

“We been in that spot a lot, where we’re the three seed,” said Cramer, whose 17-4 Rams squad will go for its district since the move to 4A when Eastmont (15-6) visits Thursday at 5 p.m.

West Valley, which is sixth in the WIAA’s RPI, has won eight of its last nine games behind the pitching of Ainsley Johnson and a balanced lineup that provides production up and down the batting order.

“We’re playing well and I like our chances with Ainsley on the mound,” Cramer said. “The girls definitely took their turns having big nights.”

He noted the hot hitting of Ashley James in a lineup with eight players batting .350 or better.

Eastmont repeated its 10-2 conference record led by juniors Halee Radich and Ava Garcia and their combined 60 RBI, while Moses Lake (14-3), which won the slowpitch state title in the fall, is led by reigning CBBN Offensive Player of the Year Hayden Morris and her seven home runs.

The path to hosting the district championship was much clearer for the Rams baseball team. Ranked fourth by VarsityWA, West Valley finished 18-0 in conference play for the second straight year, and are 21-0.

Moses Lake (12-6) visits at 5 p.m. Friday as the Rams look to repeat as district champions and better their chances of hosting during the regional round of the Class 4A state tournament.

The Mavericks gave the West Valley all it could handle, and Rhyse Elder saved the day for the Rams with a pair of two-run homers in the May 1 doubleheader between the teams.

Davis soccer locked up the No. 1 seed in the soccer tournament by beating West Valley 5-0 in the regular-season finale, host Wenatchee at 6 p.m. Thursday at Zaepfel Stadium for the district championship.

The Pirates won both meetings between the two teams.
