The conference and district success of the West Valley and Cashmere baseball teams was recognized Sunday morning by the WIAA state tournament selection committees.
And the Class 2A committee focused on Othello’s season resume rather than a blip at districts that had the Huskies earning their way to state Saturday.
The Rams (22-0) are the lone unbeaten in 4A, and seeded fourth for the second straight year after rallying past Moses Lake on Friday for its second straight district championship.
West Valley will host the regional and open against No. 13 Curtis (16-8), which tied for fifth in the South Puget Sound 4A, at 10 a.m. at Yakima County Stadium. Fifth-seeded Gonzaga Prep (20-4), the top 4A in the Greater Spokane League, and No. 13 Puyallup (18-7), seventh in the SPSL and the subject of scrutiny early this season when its first-year coach departed abruptly early last month, will meet at 1, with the winners playing at 4 to advance to the final four at May 29-30 at Everett Memorial Stadium.
“Every region is going to be tough, and every team has a pitcher or two,” Rams coach Brooks Archer said. “We were in some tough games, so that will help us.”

West Valley is 36-0 in conference play and 38-0 against CBBN foes under Archer, a former CWAC Player of the Year at Selah playing for his father and Hall of Famer Mike Archer,
Moses Lake (13-9) is seeded 15th and will head west to play No. Sumner (19-4), the SPSL regular-season co-champ with Emerald Ridge and district champ.
In the 2A, the seeding committee forgave Othello’s loss to Ellensburg in a CWAC district semifinal, and gave the Huskies the No. 3 seed after winning the CWAC by two games.
Othello will meet No. 14 Chief Sealth (15-10), which was the second-best 2A team in the 4A-3A-2A Metro League, at 10 a.m. at Othell0 High School.
CWAC district champion Selah (16-8) is ticketed for Othello as the No, 11 seed and will meet sixth-seeded Columbia River (18-6), the Greater St. Helens regular-season champ, at 1 p..m. The winners of the two games will meet at 4 for a spot in the state semifinals at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham.
Ellensburg, the CWAC district runner-up, is No. 10 and will meet seventh-seeded Nathan Hale (19-5), which topped the Metro, in the region hosted by No. 2 Tumwater at Wheeler FIeld in Centralia at 1 p.m., with the winner to meet the survivor of Tumwater and No. 15 Port Angeles.
As expected, Cashmere (23-1) will host a regional, and has made Wenatchee's Recreation Park its home for Saturday. The SCAC regular-season and district champions are the No. 2 seed, only behind another powerful group of Bulldogs, unbeaten Montesano.
Cashmere, which has won 17 straight games, will meet No. 15 in Castle Rock at 1 p.m.
SCAC runner-up Zillah (18-5) also will play in Cashmere. Seeded seventh, the Leopards will meet No. 10 Overlake/Bear Creek in the game preceding the Bulldogs' contest.
Second-year Zillah coach Drew Vankemseke was a little befuddled by the seeding, but welcomed the challenge of possibly again facing Cashmere, which the Leopards tagged with its only loss.
“It really feels that they threw darts at a dart board,” Vankemseke said. “But like I told the guys, it’s out of our hands and we can only play the teams we’re assigned.”
Royal (14-8) is seeded 16th and drew No. 1 Montesano, slated for 1 p.m. at Hoquiam's Olympic Stadiume, while the SCAC district’s final qualifier Naches Valley is No. 14 and will visit third-seeded Lynden Christian at 1 p.m.
