EAST WENATCHEE – On a rough night for area teams, the Eastmont boys soccer team continued to roll.
The Wildcats, seeded seventh in the Class 4A state tournament, romped into the quarterfinals with a 7-1 victory Wednesday night against No. 10 Puyallup at Wildcats Stadium.
Elsewhere, CBBN league rival Davis, and the CWAC’s East Valley and Toppenish all fell in Wednesday’s first round.
Eastmont (14-4-1) won its fifth straight game, and has outscored opponents 33-5 in those contests.
“After we lost to Wenatchee (May 5), the boys were fed up and wanted to do better,” Wildcats coach Vidal Hurtado said. “We woke up.”
And then some.
Already owning the school’s single-season scoring record, Seattle U-bound standout Aaron Leon scored four goals, pushing his season total to 38. Leon also assisted on a pair of goals.
Angel Ortega notched a pair of goals and assisted on another. He has 16 goals and 21 assists this season.
Osbaldo Martinez netted a goal, while Kyren Lasswell and Rogelio Hernadez added assists.
That was more than enough for a defense that has tightened up, complementing the offensive assault.
“Our backline has figured things out,” Hurtado said.
Eastmont again will host Saturday, benefitting from 15th-seeded Mount Si’s 2-0 upset of second-seeded Chiawana.
Hurtado wasn’t sure if that would be on the Wildcats Stadium’s natural surface, or on the artificial turf of the Apple Bowl, the home to rival Wenatchee.
Either way, they’re rolling into the matchup against another set of Wildcats.
CLASS 2A
East Valley bows out in first round
YAKIMA — East Valley’s return to the Class 2A state tournament ended in disappointment Wednesday night with a 2-1 (4-2 penalty kicks) loss to Sehome at Earl Barden Stadium.
The No. 12 seed Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Mason Ivcevic got on the end of a loose ball inside the penalty box and lofted the ball over Red Devils keeper Angel Lopez.
Fifth-seeded East Valley, which placed fourth at state in 2024, equalized in the 58th when junior Isaac Gutierrez sent home a Jace Cuevas corner kick with his head. The teams went back and forth through two overtime periods and were forced to settle the game from the penalty spot.
Sehome’s first shot went off the post before Cuevas gave the Red Devils a 1-0 advantage. But the Mariners made their next four shots and goalkeeper Bane Mitchell saved two of EV’s attempts to seal the win.
Sehome (17-1-4 overall) advances to play No. 4 Fife on Friday or Saturday for a spot in the final four. The CWAC champion Red Devils finished their season at 15-3 overall and will graduate 12 seniors.
NATHAN HALE 4, TOPPENISH 2: At Seattle, the No. 9 seed Wildcats were unable to keep pace with the eighth-seeded Raiders in their return to the 2A state tournament.
Senior Kristian Iniguez scored in the 12th and 50th minutes to give Toppenish a chance, but Nathan Hale found the net twice in the second half to advance.
Toppenish finished its season at 12-7-1, while Nathan Hale (16-3-2) earned a spot in the quarterfinals against No. 1 Bainbridge.
