WENATCHEE – The 16th-seeded Wahluke soccer team shook up the Class 1A state tournament Friday afternoon.

In their seventh straight state tournament, the Warriors upended No.1 Cascade of Leavenworth at the Apple Bowl to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

“The state tournament is a different animal,” Wahluke coach Cele Lopez said. “We’ve had a really inconsistent season, but the boys have been picking it up at the right time.”

Wahluke will meet No. 9 Fort Vancouver at 5 p.m. again on Wenatchee’s artificial surface.

In avenging a 4-2 loss in early April, the Warriors jumped on the Kodiaks, with junior Ethan Moreno scoring the lone goal of the first half on a feed from senior Rafael Rodriguez.

Feeding off its defense, which notched its ninth shutout of the season, Wahluke kept the pressure on Cascade, which hasn’t lost in a month.

Off an Icker Lopez corner kick, senior Alan Aroyo made it 2-0, before freshman Enrique Alejo got in on the scoring.

“I think we controlled the game today; it looked like we were comfortable on the turf,” Lopez said.

Icker Lopez, the two-time SCAC MVP then capped the scoring. With the Cascade keeper playing up, he punched it in from about 30 yards out.

Franco Perez recorded the shutout in goal.

Wahluke (17-3) will be playing for its first trip to the semifinals since taking second place in 2018.

Coach Lopez was quick to remind his team that the Trappers (17-3) will be waiting.

“I told them this is a huge accomplishment, but don’t lose your head,” he said. “We still haven’t accomplished anything as big as we want to.”

With the early evening start and Mattawa about 70 from Wenatchee, Wahluke returned home after the game.

CASHMERE 5, WAPATO 1: At Wenatchee, the SCAC regular-season champs and district runners-up got going quickly with Alejandro scoring on an assist from Ivan Gonzalez a couple minutes into the game and rolled from there.

Ethan Theiss and Tommy Botanoiu added first-half goals for the Bulldogs (17-3-1), who avenged a 2-1 loss to the Wolves on May 1.

Rojas added a goal in the second half, and Grey Jacobson capped the scoring for Cashmere, which meets 12th-seeded Meridian at 3 p.m. at the Apple Bowl looking for their first berth in the final four since taking third in 2010.

Gonzales and Edgar Reyna each had a pair of assists, and Rojas added another.

Christian Fuentes scored for Wapato, which finished the season

ROYAL 2, ELMA 1: At Vashon Island, the Knights advanced to the quarterfinals with a victory over the Eagles. Royal improved to 16-3-3 and will meet the winner of Friday’s matchup between No. 2 seed Vashon and 15th-seeded Vashon.

Royal goal-scoring information was not available at the time of posting.

FORT VANCOUVER 2, CONNELL 0: At Wenatchee, the Trappers advanced to the quarterfinals while ending the season for Connell, which finished the season 13-4-2.
