Cashmere’s big comeback spoiled

WENATCHEE – Saddled with an early seven-run deficit due in large part to a few fielding mishaps, second-seeded Cashmere battled back to force extra innings before dropping a 12-10 decision to No. 10 Overlake/Bear Creek in as Class 1A state quarterfinal at Wenatchee’s Recreation Park.

The Bulldogs, who had won 18 straight games, committed three errors – all in the Growls’ first two at-bats when they built a 7-0 lead.

Cashmere, though, chipped away and eventually took a 9-8 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, as Overlake/Bear Creek regained the lead with two runs in the seventh, before a Bulldog run sent the game to extra innings.

The Growls’ two runs in the eighth went unanswered, and they advanced to next week’s semifinals in Bellingham.

Jackson Mitchell had two hits – one of them a double – and drove in three runs for Cashmere, which finished the season 24-2.

Tom McDevitt and Jake Peterson each had three hits and an RBI, and Jacoby Yousey drove in two runs for the Bulldogs.

Cashmere began the day with a 12-1 victory against Castle Rock in five innings.

Yousey homered, tripled and drove in four runs, and Thomas Bergren had two hits, including a double, and four RBI.

NO. 10 OVERLAKE/BEAR CREEK 6, NO. 7 ZILLAH 5: At Cashmere, the Leopards had two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to score the tying run and their season came to an end.

Beau Donahoe was 3 for 3, and Caleb Rutherford had two hits for Zillah (18-6), which scored three unearned runs while giving up four.

NO. 3 LYNDEN CHRISTIAN 7, NO. 14 NACHES VALLEY 0: At Bellingham, Koben Clark, Logan Clements and Isaac Mahre each had two hits for the Rangers, who finished the season 12-13.

The Lyncs scored three runs in the bottom of the first and cruised from there.
