EAST WENATCHEE – If the last five opponents haven’t been able to stop the Eastmont boys soccer team, the Wildcats certainly weren’t going to let early nerves derail their late-season surge.
Battling through early jitters, seventh-seeded Eastmont broke away for a 3-1 victory against No. 15 Mount Si, and the program’s third berth in the Class 4A state final four and first since finishing fourth in 2018.
The Wildcats will meet 11th-seeded Lincoln of Seattle in the Class 4A state semifinals at Puyallup’s Sparks Stadium at noon Friday.
In Class 1A, 16th-seeded Wahluke continued its late run, knocking off No. 8 Fort Vancouver to earn a trip to the state semifinals at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.
At Wildcat Stadium, Eastmont (15-4-1) won for the sixth straight time, and have outscored its opponents 36-7 in that streak, although it did take a good chunk of the first half to get going Saturday.
“We were a little bit anxious, and it was hard to settle in,” Eastmont coach Vidal Hurtado said. “We defended well but in transition we weren’t producing.”
Aaron Leon got the Wildcats on the board in the 30thminute off a free kick. They took that lead into the intermission,
“Our halftime was about how we deserved to be recognized and to just believe in ourselves, and they did that in the second half,” Hurtado said.
Leon scored his 40th goal of the season in the 62nd, and assisted on Angel Ortega’s tallied his 17th goal of the season four minutes later.
Ortega and Leon also assisted on each other’s goals.
“I’m very happy Aaron is on my team but it does take a full squad,” said Hurtado, noting the force Ortega has become.
Eastmont’s defense continued to stymie opponents, pushing up in the second half, before giving up a goal to the westside Wildcats in the final five minutes.
“We were wanting the shutout and we deserved to have a clean sheet,” Hurtado said, noting the growth of freshman keeper Edwin De La Cruz
CLASS 1A
Wahluke handles Fort Vancouver
WENATCHEE – Wahluke again shrugged off its 16thseed, and cruised past No. 8 Fort Vancouver, 5-1, at the Apple Bowl to return to the Class 1A state semifinals for the first time since a second-place finish in 2018.
A day after motoring past top-seeded Cascade, 4-0, the Warriors continue to blow past opponents in their seventh straight tournament.
Two-time SCAC MVP Icker Lopez, a junior, scored a hat trick, and added an assist.
Hector Contreras had a goal and assist, Baldrick Gomez netted a score, and Salvador Ledesma added an assist.
Wahluke (18-6-2) will meet 12th-seeded Meridian at 7 p.m. Friday to cap the semifinal action in Federal Way.
NO. 12 MERIDIAN 4, NO. 4 CASHMERE 0: At Wenatchee, the Trojans stopped the Bulldogs run toward their first Class 1A state final four since a third-place finish in 2010.
Cashmere finished the season 17-4-1.
