District track and field recap: State berths wrapped up at three meets

Key battles, PRs and season-bests highlight conference showcases before state

While other sports were wrapping up their seasons this past weekend, or – in the case of baseball – starting their final tournaments, track athletes were earning berths to the state meets.

For the CBBN and CWAC qualifiers, that means a trip to Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. SCAC athletes will head to Yakima’s Zaepfel Stadium.

Both meets run from Thursday to Saturday.

At the CBBN district meet, West Valley sophomore Colby Floren and Moses Lake’s Brady Jay continued to battle in the sprints. Floren won the 100-meter dash by just 0.06 seconds. while Jay claimed the 200 by two hundredths of a second.

Wenatchee’s Alli Knoop won the latest matchup in the 800 with Rams freshman Callie Orcutt, who recorded the top 4A time this season at the May 15 Inter City Championships.

West Valley’s Sam French won the shot and discus, while teammate Benjamin Beardemphl unleashed the second-best 4A javelin throw of the season.

Wenatchee’s Mia Marcoux swept the girls sprints.

The top two finishers in each event advance to state.

Eastmont’s boys – keyed by Andrew Saenz’s hurdles sweep – won the district title, while Wenatchee edged the Wildcats on the girls side.

At the 2A district, Ellensburg’s Brea Potucek leaped to the second-best triple jump in 2A this spring, while Selah’s Chloe Myers won the shot put and discus and continues to own the state’s top marks.

Othello’s Abigail Douglas won both sprints and Grace Beachy took the 1,600 and 3.200.

East Valley’s Preston Bates won both boys hurdles events, and Gavin Case of Prosser won the shot and discus.

Ellenburg swept the district titles, with the top two finishers earning state spots.

The 1A District 5 meet, which included the SCAC and Caribou Trail League, also a sweep of teams titles with Cashmere taking both.

The Bulldogs boys 4x100 relay had the second-best 1A time this season,

Zillah sprinting star Aysia Garcia won the 100, an event in which she leads 1A, and posted a season-best in the 200 to sweep the sprints. She has the third-best 200 time in 1A this season.

Naches Valley’s Taylor Kunz also had a season-best in the 100-meter hurdles, and ranks second in 1A in the event.

The top-three finishers in each event advance to state from the 1A District 5 meet.
