TACOMA – Selah’s Chloe Myers reigns again in the Class 2A discus.
The Vikings standout threw a personal-best 145 foot, 11 inches to win the event for the second straight year, winning the event by 26 feet Thursday evening at Tacoma's Mount Tahoma High School.
“I like the ring here, it’s nice and grippy so you don’t feel like you’re going to slip,” the junior said to VarsityWA’s Todd Milles, shrugging off a missed chance to set the school record. “There wasn’t rain this year, so that was a plus.”
While the blustery conditions might have kept her from toppling the program record of 148-9 set by Katie Jacobson 1998, it didn’t keep her from improving her PR, set at last year’s Davis Invite, by half a foot.
Myers’ season-best had been 143-5, a mark she reached April 18 at the Pasco Invite.
She also holds the top 2A distance in the shot put – 42-8 – and will go for the double Saturday.
The Vikings are tied for third place in the team standings, while Ellensburg is tied for fifth.
It was a stellar day for the CWAC in the discus ring, with Prosser’s Gavin Case I169-3), Ellensburg’s Levi Gough (153-4) and East Valley’s Zeliah Wade (147-11) reached the podium in the boys event.
Elsewhere in the 2A meet, East Valley’s Preston Bates qualified second in the 110-meter hurdles, winning his heat with a time of 14.86 seconds.
Ellensburg’s Brea Potucek continued a stellar freshman season, finishing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 18-0 ½ .
In the 1,600, Bulldogs sophomore Grace Beachy was sixth at 5:03.39, and teammate Mystic Hammond was 10th in the boys race.
Toppenish’s Jack Davila was sixth in the long jump (21-10 ½) while East Valley’s Banyon Dunn and James Hull were ninth and 10th, just missing the podium.
Toppenish’s Amir Pena won the wheelchair 1,600.
In the 4A meet, Wenatchee teammates Rylee Jones (133-1) and Jalyn Rasmussen (129-6) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the javelin.
The duo has Wenatchee tied for first atop the team standings after three events.
West Valley’s Sam French continued a strong day for the CBBN in the throws, finishing fifth in the shot put (56-7 ¼), while Conner Schwab (54-6 ½) was seventh.
West Valley freshman Callie Orcutt was sixth in the 4A 1,600, while Eisenhower’s Kian Compton also made the podium, finishing eighth at 4:12.24.
Rams junior Micah Jones was 11th in the high jump at 6-3.

Zillah’s Garcia tops qualifying
YAKIMA – Zillah senior Aysia Garcia qualified first in the 100-meter dash Friday at Zaepfel Stadium.

Cashmere’s Brynne Patrick qualified fourth (12.47).
