YAKIMA – Zillah senior Aysia Garcia is set up for a busy Saturday at the Class 1A state track and field meet at Yakima’s Zaepfel Stadium.

The Leopards star sprinter is the top qualifier in the 100-meter dash, for which she was the top qualifier Thursday, clocking 12.09 seconds. Garcia’s qualifying time was 0.04 better than her season best she posted at the Don Holder Relays early last month.

Her championship pursuit begins at 11:45 a.m. with the 100 final.

She then is scheduled to anchor the 4x100 relay team about an hour later. Zillah edged SCAC rival Cashmere in photo finish to win Heat 3. The Leopards 50.73 seconds qualifier third.

Garcia also qualified first in the 200, after entering the weekend with 1A’s third-best time. The 25.23 she ran Friday bettered her season-best by 0.13 seconds.

With just a few finals, there were no SCAC champions Friday.

However, Connell’s Benjamin Naef was second in the boys javelin, while Kiona-Benton’s Jeramyah Moore was seventh,

Naches Valley’s Mia Staggs claimed third in the long jump, with Cashmere’s Taylor Kunz fourth.

The Bulldogs are sixth in the girls standings with six of 18 events completed, while the Cashmere boys are tied for seventh through five of 17 events.
