PUYALLUP – On the biggest high school stage, Eastmont’s Aaron Leon came up the biggest.
The Wildcats senior and Seattle U recruit scored a hat trick Friday afternoon, carrying the seventh seed past No. 11 Lincoln of Seattle, 3-0, in a Class 4A state semifinal at Sparks Stadium.
Eastmont advances to its first championship game where the winner of No. 8 Sumner and fifth-seeded Newport awaits in Saturday's final at 4 p.m.
“Teams always have a plan for Aaron, but he always has a plan for them,” Wildcats coach Vidal Hurtado said. “What makes him special is his reading of the game. He’s an intelligent and capable player.”
Leon netted his goal in the 14th minute on a pass from fellow senior Kodyn Flynn.
Eastmont took a 1-0 lead into halftime and scored remained that way, until Leon took a Rogelio Hernandez pass for his second goal.
The CBBN Offensive Player of the Year capped the scoring in the 69th minute off a feed from all-CBBN first-team defender Giancarlo Cordero for his 43rd goal of the season.
With the ball finding the net for the Wildcats, the defense did the rest, holding an opponent scoreless for the first time in five matches.
“We finally worked to get the shutout we were looking for,” Hurtado said. “Our backline was winning the air duels and the 1-v-1s.”
Freshman keeper Edwin Dela Cruz had eight saves for Eastmont (16-4-1).
It’s the seventh straight win for the Wildcats, and they’ve outscored their opponents 42-7 during the streak.
Eastmont guaranteed itself the best finish in program history. In their other final-four appearances, the Wildcats finished third in 2012 and fourth in 2018.
