CBBN basketball champs host events to tip off summer schedules
Davis girls hosting Pirate Classic, West Valley boys put on Summer Shootout

More than five months before opening its second defense of the Class 4A state basketball championship, the Davis girls basketball team will get a jump on preparation for the upcoming season.
The Pirates will host 14-team varsity and 11-team JV events this weekend, with round-round robin play Friday evening and Saturday, and single-elimination playoffs Sunday, culminating with 4:30 championship games.
Several miles away, the CBBN’s regular-season and district boys champion West Valley will be hosting its own event. The 13-team varsity event will have pool play Saturday, which will be broken down to mini-brackets Sunday based on the pool-play results.
The 16-team junior varsity field will be in a double-elimination bracket.
Reigning WSGBCA Coach of the Year Akil White said the annual event will be renamed the Pastor Davis Pirate Classic to honor longtime Yakima pastor, social activist and high school sports fixture Don Davis, who died this past fall.
Davis, who was the pastor at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Yakima, used to cook breakfast for the teams on Saturday, and White said that tradition will continue.
“We are going to try and keep it alive and feed all the players and coaches on Saturday again this year,” White said. “It won’t be the same, but that’s what made our tournament special.”
Besides Davis, which graduated just two players from its second straight state championship team, the Pirate Classic varsity field includes Class 1A state champion Zillah, also heavy on returning players, and three more state-qualifying teams.
Ellensburg and Selah, which placed third and sixth, respectively, in the 2A tournament, along with their CWAC rival Grandview, are among the 14 teams. As is Wapato, which advanced to the 1A tournament for the fifth straight time.
Three CBBN rivals are scheduled, as Eastmont, Sunnyside and West Valley join the Pirates.
There also will be a strong field at West Valley, including CWAC regular-season champ Selah and district winner Grandview. Zillah, which took an unbeaten record into the 1A final, also is among the teams.
SCAC runner-up and 1A third-place finisher Royal also is in the field.
Conference foes Davis and Eastmont also are set to be at WV.
Spectators are welcome at both locations.
