The defending CBBN basketball champions began the summer much in the same way they played much of last season.

Davis’ two-time defending Class 4A state-winning girls basketball team won the Pastor Davis Pirates Classic, pulling away from 1A state champ Zillah in the final.

Across town, the West Valley boys team, which has won three consecutive district titles and is considered one of the state favorites this coming season, topped 1A third-place finisher Royal 82-67 for the Summer Shootout crown.

There’s little time to rest for either team.

The Pirates this weekend will head to Seattle for the King’s Summer Shootout, which is hosted by the 1A state runner-up Knights.

King’s and coach Dan Taylor have pulled together a field that includes 2A power Lynden, which has won 77 straight gams and the last three state champions with prize recruit Finley Parcher leading the way.

Sumner, which has met Davis twice in each of the last two state tournaments and handed the Pirates their last loss, and 3A contender Bellevue also are in the field.

Coach Akil White will then take his team to the OBCA Oregon Girls High School Showcase in Medford. The tournament features teams from five states, including the top squads from Oregon and several from California.

West Valley is off to Mesa, Ariz., for the Section 7 Basketball Tournament. The event features many of the top teams from around the country, and is a hotbed for college recruiters.

The Rams will open play in Arizona against Oregon 5A champion Parkrose of Portland.

Selah, which made its first state tournament in more than 40 years and placed sixth in 2A, and Ellensburg, third in 2A behind Central Washington commit Bella Standish, also advanced to the semifinals of the Pirate Classic.

The defending CWAC regular-season champion Vikings boys squad also advanced to semifinals at West Valley, along with 3A state-qualifier Snohomish.
