The Yakima Beetles and Yakima Valley Pak are off to 2-1 starts this season headed into a busy weekend.

Yakima opened the summer last Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader against the Brewster Rockits of the Tillage League of Central and Eastern Washington.

Beetles pitchers Quinton Allen-Greggs, Andrew Roy and Ryker Heeringa combined on a seven-hitter in a 6-0 opening victory.

Andrew Serl had two hits, and Caleb Rutherford scored a pair of runs for Yakima.

Kyson Bass had a two-run double and stole a base, and the Beetles held on for a 5-4 victory to clinch the sweep.

Rutherford  pitched four shutout innings, allowing just one hit.

Yakima fell to the River City Athletics on Wednesday, 17-3.

Allen-Greggs doubled and scored a run, and Bass had two hits and knocked in a run for the Beetles.

River City, which is based out of Kennewick, features several players from the Stat Hound footprint.

Moses Lake’s Jacoby Fullbright was 4 for 4 at the plate with an RBI triple, while West Valley’s Ryan Rhoads added an RBI triple, and his Rams teammate Karter Huwe had a double and drove in a run.

Yakima heads to Spokane this weekend with a doubleheader against the Spokane Bandits on Saturday, and another twin bill Sunday at the Spokane Cannons.

The Beetles open league play Tuesday, when they visit the Hanford Flames for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.

Yakima Valley fell to USA Prime Inland Northwest 18U, 9-0, top open the season, before sweeping a doubleheader at the West Plain Cannons.

Bodie Yale had two hits, one of them a double, and Grandy Jansen had two hits and Lucas Williams doubled against USA Prime INW, which is based in Coeur d’Alene.

The Pak beat the Cannons, who call Medical Lake home, 9-7 and 15-1.

Colby Graham’s two-run double in the top of the ninth broke a 7-7 tie and lifted Yakima Valley to an opening win.

Ashton Barnes Keller had a solo home run, doubled and drove in three runs for the Pak, and Beau Benjamin had three hits.

Brody Roinestad had a two-run double for Yakima Valley in the second game, while Yale doubled and drove in three runs. Jansen added two runs, one of them a double, and two RBI.

The Pak heads to Oregon this weekend, with a single game Friday at The Dalles, with doubleheader at Grant Baseball on Saturday and the Portland Barbers the following day.
