A magical spring for Eastmont soccer standout Aaron Leon was honored Friday.

The senior was named the Gatorade Washington Player of the Year after leading the Wildcats to their first state championship late last month at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Leon was named the CBBN Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year after setting the school’s single-season scoring record with his 28th goal.

“What separates Aaron from other elite players is his ability to perform at the highest levels against the best competition,” Sunnyside coach David Guevara said in a release. “I’ve never seen a player score multiple hat tricks against state tournament-caliber teams, let alone continue to do so throughout a postseason run. His performances were not simply dominant, they were historic.”

Ranked among the top 80 recruits in the country and headed to Seattle University, Leon really took off in the postseason. After a May 5 loss to Wenatchee, the Wildcats finished the season on an eight-game winning streak, all but the first game being postseason contests.

After scoring a hat trick in a winner-to-state game to avenge two regular-season losses to the Panthers, he continued to roll in the Class 4A state tournament.

Seeded seventh, Eastmont opened state with a 7-1 victory at home against No. 10 Puyallup in which Leon recorded four goals and two assists.

He then netted two goals against 15th-seeded Mount Si as Eastmont won 3-1 in the matchup Wildcats for the program’s third berth in the final four and first since finishing fourth in 2018.

Another Leon hat trick against No. 11 Lincoln of Seattle helped send Eastmont to its first championship game.

Leon again was up to the moment, recording his third hat trick of the state tournament, and the Wildcats (17-4-1) beat eighth-seeded Sumner, 3-1, in the final.

The 12 goals in the state-tournament pushed his season total to 46 and 101 for his career to go along with 37 assists.

Eastmont coach Vidal Hurtado ran out of superlatives by the end of the state tournament.

“I was hesitant to say this the last couple weeks, but he's a generational player,” Hurtado said after the 4A final. “I won’t see a player like him in a long time.”
