The CBBN champion basketball teams are holding their own in summer events.

After winning their own tournaments, the West Valley boys, winners of three straight district titles,  and two-time defending Class 4A state champion Davis girls hit the road this week.

At the prestigious Section 7 tournament in Mesa, Ariz., the Rams bounced back from an opening loss Friday to advance to the consolation final in their bracket.

Junior-to-be Austin Birley is averaging 29.0 points and 10.3 rebounds in West Valley’s three games,

The 6-foot-6 combo guard poured in 35 points on 16-of-23 shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds in Friday’s opener against Oregon 5A champion Parkrose, an 83-74 loss.

West  Valley wings Jett Bremerman and Jrayden Whitfield have averaged 14.7  and 16.7, respectively, and combined to sink 17 3-pointers.

Bremerman had 21 points and Whitfield 20 to go along with Birley’s 26 in Saturday morning’s 87-64 handling of Ironwood High School of Glendale, Ariz.

The Rams added a 75-43 victory against Chandler, Ariz., Saturday afternoon. Birley had 25, and Jaiden Evans, who will be a sophomore in the fall, had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

West Valley meets Cherry Creek, Colo., at 9:15 Saturday in the consolation final of the Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission (ASEC) bracket.

Davis rolling at King’s Shootout

Davis swept through the Gentleness division in pool play of the Varsity Sword part of the King’s Summer Shoutout.

The Pirates opened play Friday by handling Tahoma 66-49, and followed that with a 74-31 thumping of Jackson Black to win the division.

In bracket play, Davis beat Bothell, 49-39, to advance to the semifinals of the No. 1 seed bracket where 3A state runner-up Bellevue awaits for an 11 a.m. Sunday contest at Shorecrest High School.

Last winter, the Pirates defeated the Wolverines 79-68.

Elsewhere in the Sword, West Valley finished 1-1 in the Kindness Division, falling to Bellevue, 64-27, before beating Lake Stevens, 45-22.

The Rams continued their stingy defense to open the No. 2 and 3 seeds bracket, beating Meadowdale, 37-22.

West Valley meets Tahoma at 3 p.m. Sunday at Kamiak High School in a semifinal.

In the Shield half of the tournament, Ellensburg, which finished third in the 2A state tournament, won both of its Confidence Division games, beating Mariner, 39-27, before edging Sammamish, 46-44.

The Bulldogs fell to Mercer Island, 51-34, to open bracket play, and will meet Holy Names at 10 Sunday morning.

Prosser off to strong start in Pasco

Class 2A state runner-up Prosser is 5-1 after three doubleheaders in the Chiawana Summer League.

The Mustangs opened play Tuesday by sweeping Richland and Kamiakin, and followed that Wednesday by beating CWAC rival Grandview before falling to the host Riverhawks.

Friday brought another sweep with victories against Royal and Kennewick.

The Knights, who finished third in the 1A state tournament, are 2-2, with victories against Kamiakin and Walla Walla, and a loss to Southridge.

Connell beat former SCAC rival Burbank in its only games, while Grandview has played two games, with results of its game against Kamiakin unavailable.
