YAKIMA – Two weeks of all-state competition are about to get rolling in Yakima.

The Earl Barden All-Star Classic is first up for the top senior football players in Class 2A, 1A and the Bs. Coaches were scheduled to arrive late Monday evening, with players set to report Tuesday morning.

Practices will begin Tuesday and continue through Friday, with the game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Earl Barden Stadium at East Valley High School.

Competitions between the East and the West squads, including bowling, minute-to-win-it competitions and a belly flop contest.

The CWAC and SCAC will be represented in the games.

East Valley coach Eric Berg, the WAC Coach of the Year who guided the Red Devils to their best season in more than 20 years, is coaching the East.

Berg will have plenty of his players on his team, including his son Jaxon, whose record-setting season as the EV quarterback earned him the CWAC MVP. He’ll be joined by teammates Braden Albrecht (RB/LB), Jayden Buckalew (DB) and Dominic Verduzco (WR/DB).

Prosser lineman Josiah West, who is bound for Montana, Ephrata’s Calvin Lybbert and Othello lineman Miguel Zuniga also will represent the CWAC.

Six-time defending 1A state champion Royal brings the star power with receiver/defensive back Shea Stevenson who was the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year, who also was voted the classification’s player of the year by the Washington State Football Coaches Association.

Knights all-SCAC lineman Rolando Cedillo also is scheduled to play.

Cashmere, which was the 1A runner-up after nearly beating Royal twice, has three players on the East roster, including quarterback Rylan Hatmaker, return specialist Isaac Zavala, who finished his career with a state-record 11 punt returns for touchdowns, and receiver Logan Spies.

All three players earned all-state honors.

Next week, the All-State Baseball Series will come to Parker-Faller Field.

Nearly 80 players were divided into four teams, and those teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the winners advancing to Sunday’s championship game at 1:45, which follows a matchup of semi losers at 10:15.

Two-time SCAC MVP Tom McDevitt of Cashmere will play for Team Baker, as will 2025 CWAC MVP Brandon Stone, who is headed to Washington State University.

Othello teammates Aiden Garza and Seattle U-bound Quade Gonzalez are part of Team Rainier.

Some players selected for both events were unable to participate for various reasons, including requests by their colleges and summer baseball schedules.
