Mavericks, Knights win camp competitions in run-up for fall
Moses Lake captures Battle of the Basin, Royal takes title at Monday's CWU event

A week and a half after mixing it up with each other, the Moses Lake and Royal football teams have some hardware to show for their spring and summer preparations for the 2026 season.
Moses Lake, the two-time defending CBBN champions, won the Battle of the Basin at the Tri-City Football Camp last week. At the Central Washington camp on Monday, Royal won the Monday Night Lights this week.
Both competitions were bracket play, and teams started from the 10-yard line and had four plays to score. Like overtime, both teams get a chance to score and the play continues until one team scores in an overtime and the other doesn’t.
In the Tri-City event which included much of the Mid-Columbia Conference and CWAC favorite Prosser, the Mavericks opened play against Class 1A semifinalist Lynden Christian. The Lyncs dropped eight defenders against a Moses Lake offense that threw for more than 4,000 yards and 73 touchdowns.
That was quite all right for the Mavs and head coach Kyler Haneberg – who took over after Brett Jay stepped down with the graduation of his record-setting quarterback and son, Brady.
“We’ll take what they give us,” Haneberg said.
Elijah Burns, Moses Lake’s top rusher last year with 547 yards and one of the conference’s top printers in the spring, could have some new backs lining up next to him.
Linebackers John Rainey, the 2025 CBBN Defensive Player of the Year, and Petrah McKenzie, a first-team all-conference selection, got into the mix this past weekend,
Neither had a carry last season.
McKenzie, listed last season at 5-foot-10 and 220 pounds, came up big in the championship game against Hanford, which had topped host Richland.
After stopping the Falcons on fourth down, he took the handoff from Nolan Decubber and barreled his way to the end zona on the Mavs’ first play from scrimmage to give them the victory,
“I think it’s definitely a wrinkle of the offense that will open up,” said Haneberg, noting that Moses Lake won’t become three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust just yet.
“We’ll definitely still air it out,” he said.
Royal wraps up camp Tuesday in Ellensburg.
Winners of six straight Class 1A state championships, the Knights again will be the favorite in the classification, with left-handed quarterback Grant Wardenaar, standout tailback Dax Jenks, a slew of receivers, and a deep defense back.
Royal will welcome CWU coaches and players to David Nielsen Memorial Field for a one-day camp. There will be a session for third through eighth grand, and another for high school players.
