The Prosser Mustang Shootout gets going Wednesday with a loaded field, especially on the girls side.

Two-time defending Class 4A state champion Davis leads the seven-team Pool A. The Pirates will be joined by 1A champion Zillah and the Shootout hosts, 2A runner-up Prosser.

Mid-Columbia Conference champion Chiawana, unbeaten until the regional round of the 4A state tournament, and league-mate Kamiakin also are in the pool, as is Selah, which placed sixth in its first trip to the state tournament in 45 years.

West Valley and new coach LeVonte Allen round out Pool A.

Davis went unbeaten at the OBCA Oregon Girls High School Showcase in Medford, Ore., this past weekend.

After hammering Portland’s Benson High School 57-32, the Pirates defeated California contenders San Ramon Valley, 55-48, and Clovis West, 62-59.

The Danville and Fresno schools won 26 and 30 games, respectively, a season ago.

Davis wrapped up place Saturday by defeating Oregon Class 6A champion West Linn, 62-64.

Prosser also has been busy this summer, and Mustangs coach Jessica Huntington recently caught up with Jamie Council of The Sports Council.

Zillah coach Joel Yellow Owl coached a shorthanded East to a victory Saturday in the 29th annual Washington Girls Basketball All-State event at the Hub Sports Center at Liberty Lake east of Spokane.

Without CWAC all-leaguers Bella Standish (Ellensburg) and Leyla Rodriguez (Grandview), and Zillah standouts Makenna Klitzke and Bella Valadez because of injuries, the East won 81-67.

West Valley of Spokane’s Cassie Brooks led the East with 16 points, while Royal’s Graycie Kast added 13.

The Pirates and Leopards will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with Zillah and Prosser to cap the first day's action at 8.

Davis and the hosts play Thursday at 8 p.m.

Pool B includes the CBBN’s Eastmont and Moses Lake, Toppenish of the CWAC, and 1A state-runner-up King’s.

Sunnyside, East Valley and Kiona-Benton are part of Pool C.

On the boys side, the CWAC’s district champion and state sixth-place finisher Grandview is in Pool A, along with rival Prosser, while East Valley is in Pool B.

Wahluke also is in Pool B.
