The summer basketball schedule is winding down, and three of the area’s top teams put up strong showings this past weekend in one of the summer’s biggest events.

The West Valley, Sunnyside and Royal boys basketball teams all went 3-1 in the WIBCA Showcase at various sites in King County.

Winners of three straight CBBN district championships, the Rams continued its strong summer in its four games at Lake Washington High School.

Versatile guard Austin Birley, ranked as one of the top players in the class of 2027, scored 20 or more points in three games, while fellow junior-to-be Jett Bremerman recorded two 20-plus-point games, including a West Valley weekend-best 28 in a 67-65 victory against Auburn in a rematch of a Class 4A round-of-12 game.

The Rams also rolled past Roosevelt and 1A contender Annie Wright and James Thomas, who’ll be a sophomore this fall and is the son of longtime NBA player and Tacoma legend Isaiah Thomas.

West Valley fell to Tualatin, the Oregon 6A state champion.

Over the course of hosting their own tournament, traveling to the Section 7 event in Arizona, four games at the University of Washington, and the WIBCA Showcase, the Rams compiled a 12-4 record.

They’ll also be the favorite again in the CBBN, with Sunnyside likely to challenge for a return to the state tournament.

Senior-to-be Aiden Sanchez averaged more than 30 points in the Grizzlies’ four games at Sammamish High School, including 38 in a victory against Kentwood.

With Sanchez, the CBBN’s leading scorer last winter, and fellow senior Julian Villanueva, who averaged nearly 13 points per game last season, Sunnyside will have a solid 1-2 punch.

At Bellevue College, Royal knocked off a pair of 4A teams (Chiawana, Sumner), and a 3A squad (Edmonds Woodway). The Knights, who finished third in 1A, also took 4A Kennedy Catholic to wire.

Reigning SCAC MVP Grant Wardenaar had games of 45 and 34 points. This while also again quarterbacking the six-time defending state champion football team through June practices.

Manny Ruvalcaba put up 26 points against Kennedy Catholic.

Royal also defeated Lynden Christian at the Central Washington camp, and could be the team most likely to wrest the title from the Lyncs.
