POST FALLS, Idaho – Yakima started quickly Friday in the 25-team Spokane Wood Bat Classic with a pair of 6-4 victories.

Playing at Brett James Field in Post Falls, Yakima used a six-run fifth inning keyed by Nathan Kibbe’s three-run homer to beat the Calgary Blues.

Andrew Serl added two hits and Braden Albrecht doubled and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly the Beetles.

Ryker Heeringa pitched six innings, striking out six and walking five, to earn the win. Brock Goodell pitched a perfect seventh for the save.

In an evening game against River City Premier of Post Falls, Andrew Roy pitched a strong six innings, striking out 12 and giving up just a pair of runs for the Beetles. Kibbe tossed a scoreless seventh to notch a save.

Yakima scored three runs in the second without a hit. A walk, three straight hit batters, a sac bunt and fielder’s choice led to a 4-1 lead.

Blake Gibbons had a one-run double, Albrecht scored two runs, stole a pair of bases and knocked in a run, and Quinton Allen-Greggs had an RBI single.

The Beetles (10-12) continue pool play Saturday against the Spokane Expos at 8 a.m. and the Spokane Crew at 10:30.

Consolation and quarterfinal play is scheduled for Sunday, with the semifinals and championship Monday.
