YAKIMA – Yakima Valley wrapped up a season sweep of rival Yakima, and now heads to Spokane to defend its Senior Legion state championship.

The Pak took both ends of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Beetles at Parker Faller Field, winning the opener 14-1 before closing out the regular season with a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

Saturday, Yakima Valley also swept the Beetles, and finished league play 10-2.

State opens Saturday and runs through July 29, with the regional tournament set for Aug. 6-10 in Medford, Ore.

In Sunday’s first game, Yakima Valley broke a 1-1 tie with a six-run top of the third inning.

Jake Jansen’s triple pushed in a run in the rally, and Beau Benjamin knocked in a run with a double.

After adding another run in the fifth to push the lead to 8-1, the Pak scored another six runs in the sixth.

Benjamin had a two-run single in the rally, while Jake Jansen and Christian Keller added RBI singles.

Yakima Valley totaled 13 hits in the contest, with Benjamin leading the way with four hits and four RBI, and Jansen had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

Ashton Barnes-Keller added two hits and scored a run, and Colby Graham and Lucas Williams both doubled and drove in a run.

Andrew Roy doubled and Kyson Bass singled in a run for the Beetles.

In the nightcap, the Pak again had a big inning to break a tied score. A four-run fifth gave Yakima Valley a lead it wouldn’t lose.

Alex Morales doubled home a run in the rally, while Bodie Yale, Brody Roinestad and Drew McDaniel all had RBI singles.

Morales finished with two hits and two runs, Roinestad added two hits and knocked in two runs, and McDaniel chipped in two hits.

Braden Albrecht had a pair of two ripples and scored twice for the Beetles, Nathan Kibbe added a hit and two RBI, and Ryker Heeringa singled twice.

Yakima Valley (27-10) will be playing for its 10thstate championship in the last 33 years. Last year the Pak won by forfeit when Port Angeles’ Wilder Baseball Club pulled out of the title game, citing a scheduling conflict.

Yakima finished the season 17-23.
