The August quiet period is almost here, meaning summer teams that haven’t finished their schedules soon will.

Several area girls basketball players will head to Ohio with the Northwest Blazers for the national tournament this weekend, while CWAC contender Grandview will host a girls tournament.

On the fastpitch field, two-time defending state champion Yakima Diamond Cats are off to Chehalis for a tournament, before hosting their own to cap the season.

Davis prized-recruit Cheyenne Hull, the two-time MaxPreps Class 4A Player of the Year for the back-to-back state champion Pirates, and Eastern Washington-bound Prosser senior Herbie Wright, the reigning CWAC MVP and two-time conference scoring champ, will head to Hamilton, Ohio, for the GUAA finals with the powerful Northwest Blazers.

Undefeated this season, the Blazers 17U squad features four players in the ESPN top 100 for the class of 2027 – Hull (69th), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho’s Brookslee Colvin (25th), Lynden’s Finley Parcher (27th) and Montana’s Spencer Laird (46th, headed to Stanford).

Hull and Parcher, who has won two straight 2A Player of the Year awards for the three-time defending state champion Lions, each scored 19 points in the Blazers’ 80-60 victory over the West Virginia Thunder on ESPN2.

Both teams entered the game unbeaten, but the Northwest club used its fastbreak to pull away from the Thunder, which was without No. 2 recruit Ivanna Wilson Manyacka, who was playing with the national team

The Blazers will have five teams playing at the Spooky Nook Sports Champion Mill.

Zillah players Angelina Buck, Makenna Klitzke – the regining SCAC MVP for the 1A champs – and Bella Valadez are part of the 17U Rise, while Prosser sophomore Mickey Wright is on the 15U team. The program’s 16U and 14U also are headed to Ohio.

Grandview hosting tournament

The Grandview girls basketball team, which just missed out on a state-tournament berth in the rugged CWAC, will host a three-day tournament the tips off late Friday afternoon.

Included in the field are perennial Class 1A power Lynden Christian, 2B state champion Cle Elum, the CBBN’s Sunnyside, Grandview and Toppenish from the CWAC, and the SCAC’s Naches Valley and state-regular Wapato.

Pool play will continue through Sunday morning with placing games that afternoon.

Diamond Cats have two tourneys left

The Yakima Diamond Cats, who won their second consecutive state tournament earlier this summer, are headed to Chehalis for the seven-team Summer Meltdown tournament.

Pool play is Saturday with the single-elimination tournament Sunday, with the championship set for 3 p.m.

Yakima will then host Hot August Nights July 31-Aug. 2.
