It’ll be the last run for the Yakima Diamond Cats this weekend.

Coming off a tournament title at the Summer Meltdown in Chehalis last weekend, Yakima will be part of the Hot August Nights at Selah’s Carlon Park. The Greater Yakima Girls Softball Association-hosted event plays overnight, with games beginning late Friday night into Saturday morning, and single-elimination action mostly early Sunday.

The 16/18U tournament will feature 18 teams divided into three, six-team divisions for pool play. First-, second- and third-place finishers in pool play will advance to the gold bracket, while fourth through sixth will compete in the silver brackets.

Both brackets will be single elimination.

It  will cap the season for the Diamond Cats, and likely the final run of  the program, which has been together for about a decade.

The team is made up of mostly East Valley and West Valley players, with a Naches Valley standout and two westsiders as well.

“Coaching this team for nearly a decade has been an honor and a privilege,” said Diamond Cats coach Casey Johnson, whose daughter Ainsley is a top pitcher for the club and won the CBBN MVP this past season for the Rams. “I can not thank the players, my coaches, and our families enough for allowing me to be a small part of their lives. They have all given me way more than I could ever repay them on the softball field.

“Travel teams don’t stay together like this one. It’s rare, and very special. It’s been an amazing ride and I will miss everything about it when our time is done.

Last weekend, the Diamond Cats finished Saturday’s pool play 2-1 before rolling through three bracket games Sunday, outscoring opponents 17-5 to claim the championship in Chehalis.

They opened the day by beating the Oregon-based Lydo’s Lab 7-3. Yakima got an RBI triple from Brooklyn Root, and a two-run single from Lauren Lewis.

Root also allowed one unearned run in four innings before Johnson closed the contest with two hitless innings.

Johnson dominated against Washington Avengers-Salas, striking out 10 in a complete game, giving up two hits and an unearned run in a 4-1 victory.

Kodie Rasmussen had two triples, knocked in a run and scored two more for the Diamond Cats, who also got two hits from Calleigh Sinnes and a double from Sophiya Castaneda.

In the championship, East Valley junior Elise Heater scattered five hits over six innings, and got plenty of support in a 7-1 victory over Washington Avengers Charlton.

Castaneda provided a two-run triple, and Ashleigh James doubled in two runs for Yakima (22-9).
