BRANSON, Mo. – The Kennewick American 12-year-olds lost in their final pool-play game on Monday, falling 13-1 to host Branson, Mo., at the Cal Ripken World Series.
After playing a bit of a waiting game while pool play wrapped up after its game, Kennewick found out it qualified for the Gold championship bracket, rather than the consolation Iron Man bracket.
And in one of Tuesday's first-round games of the Gold Bracket, the American 12s will get a chance to avenge its pool-play loss with a rematch against Branson at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, Kennewick won its third pool-play game of the tournament, beating Stafford, Va., 9-5.
The team used a five-run third inning to take the lead for good.
Mason Hansen went 2 for 3 at the plate, with a double and three RBI; while teammate Wesley Duarte was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Tanner Prince pitched the first two innings for Kennewick, and he was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
“We were coming into (Monday) looking pretty good at 3-0,” said Martinez.
However, Branson pounded Kennewick’s pitching from the get-go in that final pool play game.
For Kennewick, Adam Sloot and William Carlson each had doubles.
“I said the other day that pitching and defense were our strengths,” said Martinez. “But injuries have forced us to make some pitching changes. We’ve struggled some there.”
After Monday’s contest, Kennewick was still ranked No. 10 in the standings.
“But there are 14 teams who have 1 loss or less in this tournament, and only the top 12 get into the championship bracket,” said Martinez.
The tiebreaker is runs against, and that 13-1 loss gives Kennewick a minus-2 net total.
Sneaking into the Gold Bracket, the American 12s drew Branson, which also was 3-1 in pool play but outscored its opponents 39-12.
