BRANSON, Mo. – The Kennewick American 12s’ run as the Cal Ripken World Series ended Wednesday morning.

Hawaii scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, and then held on for a 5-4 victory in the World Series quarterfinals at the Ballparks of America, ending Kennewick’s season. The American 12s were 4-2 in Branson, Mo., after winning the Northwest Regional tournament late last month in Meridian, Idaho.

KA won its first three games of pool play at the World Series, falling to host Branson to cap the round-robin play of the tournament. The 12th-seeded American 12s avenged that loss in Tuesday’s Gold Bracket with a 4-2 victory against the No. 5 seed.

Kennewick got going early Wednesday as Mason Hansen, who led the game off with a walk, scored a run on Adam Sloot’s double to center field to give KA a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Hawaii scored three runs in the bottom of the inning.

KA battled back, pulling to within a run in the third, taking advantage of a pair of Hawaii errors. The American 12s took the lead back an inning later, as Peter Taggares scored on an error, and Presley Martinez coming in on a wild pitch.

RBI singles in the fourth and fifth would tie the score, and give Hawaii the lead.

Kennewick mounted one last charge in the sixth, with Taggares hitting a two-out single. He advanced to second base on a passed ball before a groundout ended the contest.

Taggares and Martinez each had two hits and a run for the American 12s, and Sloot had a hit, a run and an RBI.
