MOSES LAKE, Wash. — On the tall grass of the back practice field Wednesday, a new chapter was officially underway.

The post-Brady Jay era.

Replacing the Montana-bound record setter, who tossed a state-record 72 touchdown passes last season in leading the Mavericks to the WIAA Class 4A quarterfinals, is  obviously a big storyline around the reigning 4A CBBN champions.

And it might be a 3-for-1 deal much of preseason camp.

Jacoby  DeLeon is the pocket passer. Caden Barney is the change-up runner. And  Nolan Decubber — the slight leader in the starting-quarterback race —  has the best all-around skill set.

“(Decubber) is a mixture of the other two,” first-year Mavericks coach Kyler Haneberg said.

At  least on the first day of training camp Wednesday, Haneberg divided up  snaps almost evenly among the three signal callers — in all areas of the  field.

Decubber, who was Brady’s direct backup a year ago, was  usually first in line to handle work. He was followed by DeLeon and then  Barney, who is likely best-served in a “Slash” role because he has  played receiver and can run the football.

THE THREE CANDIDATES DISCUSS THE BATTLE

“I think (a quarterback  battle) is really good,” Decubber said. “It’s making all of us play  better, making all of our reps count.”

As far as what the three of  them have taken from watching Jay guide the offense the past three  seasons, all of them pointed to his leadership.

“His grit,” Barney said.

“(Jay) was great at commanding the offense,” DeLeon said.
