Reigning CWAC Most Valuable Player Xzyyvn Martinez won’t have to go too far to play college baseball.

The Othello senior committed Friday to play for Central Washington and coach and Aaron Vaughn, the former Wenatchee Valley head coach who on July 1 replaced longtime Wildcats coach Desi Storey.

Martinez, a right-hander, was the ace of the Huskies’ stout pitching staff. During his junior campaign, he boasted a paltry 0.51 earned-run average and struck out 111 batters against 16 walks in 69 1/3 innings of work for the CWAC regular-season champions.

In a state opener against Chief Sealth, Martinez tossed 8 2/3 shutout innings, while striking out 16 and walking none in a 1-0 victory for the Huskies, who finished third in the 2025 state tournament.

Martinez also was strong at the plate, batting .397 with 22 RBI.

He was named to Prep Baseball Report’s Class 2A/1A/2B/1A all-state team as a two-way player, and was one of three area players to be named to VarsityWA’s all-state team.

Mid-Columbia Player of the Year Zach Vega of Kamiakin was named 4A’s top player, while Richland’s Michael Revell, the MCC’s pitching MVP who is bound for Grand Canyon, was a pitcher on the website’s team.

Martinez joins three others from this year’s team who are set to play collegiately.

Infielder and pitcher Quade Gonzalez is headed for Seattle U, center fielder RJay Garza will play baseball and football at Whitworth, and pitcher Aiden Garza is bound for Columbia Basin College.

Othello finished the season 22-5 and 15-1 in CWAC play and advanced to the 2A state quarterfinals under coach Sonny Garza, a member of the 2003 state championship team.
