Last year’s top team in the SCAC – including six-time defending Class 1A state champion Royal and fellow finalist Cashmere – rolled to big victories Friday night to open the season.

The top-ranked Knights and No. 3 Bulldogs will rekindle their rivalry next Friday at David Nielsen Memorial Field. Royal, which has won 48 straight games, escaped both matchups last season – winning the regular-season game in overtime and holding off a two-point try to win in the state championship.

Both rolled Friday, as did No. 7 Zillah and Kiona-Benton, while Connell held off Wapato.

Here are some highlights from Friday’s action:

CASHMERE 64, COLLEGE PLACE: At Cashmere, junior quarterback Mac Carlson debuted by completing 9 of 11 passes for 237 yards and five touchdowns. Brett Rubio had two receptions for 52 yards and a pair of scores, and Jayce McMahon rushed for and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

ROYAL 55, LAKESIDE 6: At Nine Mile Falls, Jackson Flood rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries, and Dax Jenks added a pair of scoring runs. Each also caught a TD pass from Grant Wardenaar who finished 14 of 21 for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

ZILLAH 42, WAHLUKE 0: At Zillah, Maverick Myers ran for 109 yards anf three touchdowns, and Zayiden Aparicio added two receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown for the Leopards.

KIONA-BENTON 34, NACHES VALLEY 8: At Benton City, Asher Smith and Hayden Flores each tossed a pair of touchdowns for the Bears, and Quincy Jones added six receptions for 47 yards and a pair of TDs.

CONNELL 13, WAPATO 12: At Connell, the Eagles overcame a 12-0 deficit in the fourth quarter, spoiling a big night for Wolves running back Buddy Lopez, who rushed for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
