PASCO — The Mid-Columbia Conference opened the high school football season, as a group on Friday, with a 7-3 record.

That, of course, included Kennewick taking down fellow MCC member Pasco 51-12 in a non-league contest.

But there were plenty of outstanding first night results.

Chiawana and Kamiakin traveled to the Vancouver area and came away with dominating victories.

Sageview got its first win in school history, as the Lobos beat Fife 42-29.

The game was played on the Sageview campus in north Pasco to a full house, with a pre-game parade and food trucks for fans.

Xavier Green had a pick-6 for the second-year Lobos, who jumped out to a 35-6 halftime lead over the Trojans.

Visiting Richland fell 34-14 to Moses Lake, as the host Mavericks outscored the Bombers 20-0 in the second half.

Hermiston scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter and went on to rout visiting Union of Vancouver 58-28; and Hanford went up to Spokane and beat Ferris 35-21.

KENNEWICK 51, PASCO 12: Bradley Parker, starting his first game at quarterback, had three touchdown passes as the visiting Lions took down the Bulldogs at Edgar Brown Stadium.

Parker threw the TDs to three different receivers — a 57-yarder to LeRoy Ables, a 15-yard strike to Joshua Combs, and a 16-yarder to Garet Craft.

“I do what I can to scramble out of the pocket,” said Parker, who finished with 139 yards passing and another 90 yards of rushing. “We practice that (scramble) a lot in practice.”

Kennewick coach Randy Affholter still didn’t celebrate his offensive unit, saying there is just a lot to improve upon.

“But I thought our defense played well,” he said.

Parker agreed.

“Our defense was phenomenal,” said the senior.

There were 9 tackles for loss for the Lions, including 5 quarterback sacks. Two fumble recoveries. And a pick-6 of 37 yards by defensive back Craft.

Oh yeah. Kennewick blocked a punt too. And senior Peter Smith picked it up and fell into the end zone from 2 yards out for a score.

Smith, a defensive lineman, finished the game with 6 tackles (3 for loss) and two QB sacks. Linebacker Nikolai Tyutyunnik added 6 tackles (2 for loss) and 2 QB sacks. Defensive lineman Cooper Larson — all 6-foot-10 and 235 pounds of him — had 4 tackles, of which three were for losses and one of them a sack.

Pasco coach DJ Search says his team will get better when it finds more consistency in its preparation during the week.

“I think we know we’re physical now (after this game), and I think we’re in great shape,” said Search.

JoJo Cole, a junior, led the Bulldogs with 8 tackles. He forced a fumble on one play that teammate Ayden Mercado recovered and returned for a 57-yard touchdown.

Even though Kennewick and Pasco are MCC members, this contest didn’t count in the standings.

The first two weeks of the MCC season are all non-league games.

But Kennewick athletic director Anna Harris and Pasco AD Greg Domingos wanted to continue what has become one of the state’s longest rivalries.

Friday’s contest was the 130th game in the series that has taken 115 years to play. The only thing that has stopped this series has been the two World Wars and covid.

Pasco leads the all-time series 70-54-6.

Here are some other MCC games with a few details:

CHIAWANA 28, CAMAS 7: Emmett Osterdock fired two touchdown passes, Sawyer Sommerville added two touchdowns and an interception, and Trey Maldonado had two interceptions — including a pick-6 — as the visiting Riverhawks took down the Papermakers.

KAMIAKIN 21, EVERGREEN (VANCOUVER) 7: The visiting Braves dominated ball possession, and Kamiakin quarterback Gavin Cronrath fired three touchdown passes in the non-league win.

Mason Severson caught two of those TD passes and was well over 100 yards in receiving.

Noah Starr caught the game’s first touchdown pass.

SOUTHRIDGE 29, CHENEY 9: Using their vaunted Wing-T offense, the Suns rolled over the Greater Spokane League’s visiting Blackhawks.

Jacob Korotkov rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns, while Tayton Jackman added 124 rushing yards. Jackman also had an interception.

MT. SPOKANE 31, WALLA WALLA 20: The visiting Blue Devils fell behind early and couldn’t rally past the Wildcats.

Wa-Hi junior Lincoln Heinrich passed for 199 yards and three touchdown passes — including two to Kalama Roberson.
