Six-time defending Class 1A state football champion Royal debuted at No. 1 in Washington State Football Coaches Association poll Wednesday afternoon.

The Knights, who on Friday will host Zillah looking for their 52nd straight victory, one shy of the school record set 2014-18, and the third longest winning streak in state history. Bellevue won 67 consecutive games from 2010-14.

Cashmere is third and the Leopards No. 8 in the WSFCA, and hold down the No. 3 and 5 positions, respectively, in the VarsityWA rankings.

Kennewick is No. 4 in the 3A poll after outlasting rival Kamiakin last Friday, while Moses Lake is seventh in 4A, with Eastmont tied for 10 in the coaches poll. The Lions are No. 8 in VarsityWA rankings, which also have the Mavericks seventh, but doesn’t have Eastmont.

Chiawana is No. 9 in the VarsityWA 4A poll.

Prosser checks in at No. 8 in the WSFCA rankings, while the Mustangs are fourth in the VaristyWA top 10 in which Selah holds down the final spot. East Valley is 10th in the coaches poll.

Cashmere remains No. 1 in 1A

Cashmere holds down 1A’s top spot in the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association poll for a second straight week.

The Bulldogs finished third at last year’s state tournament, pushing six-time defending champion Chelan to a fifth set in the semifinals, and won the small-school SunDome Volleyball Festival.

Connell, which is tied atop the SCAC with Cashmere at 6-0 in conference play, ticked up one spot to No. 7.

Wenatchee and Kamiakin, each the winner of five straight conference titles, are ranked fifth and tied for ninth, respectively, in 4A.

Ellensburg, which is going for a 10th straight conference title, dropped a spot in the 2A poll, and is tied for third with four-time defending state champ Columbia River.

Prosser is seventh and Selah ninth, with Toppenish and East Valley just outside the top 10.

CROSS COUNTRY

10 area teams ranked in coaches poll

In the third week of Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, Ellensburg is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, while the Bulldogs boys squad is fourth.

Selah boys and girls are both ranked seventh and Ephrata’s girls are No. 8.

In 4A, Kamiakin’s boys are fourth and girls eighth, while Hermiston’s boys are ninth in 3A.

College Place rounds out the 1A boys rankings at No. 10; while Naches Valley hits No. 6 in 1A girls.
